Re: Promising boxers that disappeared/walked away
The legendary ( in my mind ) Wapping Assassin Jimmy Flint, a right hard bastard and up and comer in the late 70’s. Massive puncher who knocked everyone out till he met his match in the brilliant pat cowdell. Fought his way back to a final eliminator and was a big favourite but was shockingly stopped at the hands of the unfancied Steve Sims in brutal fashion, check it out.
Then abruptly retired and became an actor - appearing in a lot of those uk gangster flics.
Can’t blame him, he didn’t have much of a defence but what an exciting fighter he was while it lasted.

Jesus Christ! Just watched that on youtube....he really did have no defence whatsoever and what a brutal knock out. Sims absolutely starched him!MightyWarrior wrote: ↑24 Aug 2018, 05:04 The legendary ( in my mind ) Wapping Assassin Jimmy Flint, a right hard bastard and up and comer in the late 70’s. Yeah he also had small roles in Krays and Lock, Stock and appeared in The Bill. And wrote and performed in his own stage play.
Because light hearted post modern gangster romps like Lock Stock was so popular, Peck was unable to get funding for his ambitious and morally complex project Gangster, which would’ve put Tibbs & Flint in dramatic conflict again.
Really like how Flint comes across on camera, genuine presence and brutally honest.
Saw only his defeats to Cowdell and Sims but hugely exciting fights and he displayed enormous toughness & bravery.

Something about kebab shops wasn’t it, in the case of Fewkes?dave_smith wrote: ↑22 Aug 2018, 18:14Adrian Dodson what was his record?
At the time wasn’t Ian McNeilly close friends with Fewkes and said he didn’t live the life outside of the ring so it caught up with him eventually? Didn’t he come back a weight or two above where he was previously?
Big disappointment when he pulled out of the John Murray fight, a genuine and rare matchup between 2 prospects.

Dyou know I’ve never registered Jimmy was in those films, despite seeing a few of em, I’ll have to rewatch.
Yes Sims was Welsh, and clearly (!) hard as nails.
Christ that really was a brutal finish for him, glad he retired seeing that again. as you can see back in the 70s medical treatment consisted of his manager gently patting him on the face trying to bring him round !

Re: Promising boxers that disappeared/walked away
Jimmy got cocky against Sims by dropping his arms and he paid the price in the days when Welsh featherweights were all iron men. Mickey Duff told Sims he was one of the hardest men he had ever seen because Flint was a truly brutal puncher but a truly brutal puncher who happened to be around at the same time as Pat Cowdell.
Re: Promising boxers that disappeared/walked away
What's happened to that Joe Pigford who boxed on a few of FW's shows? Haven't heard about him in 18 months or so. Not sure if he's quit.
One from over the pond - Frankie Gomez. Got to about 20-0 with a win over the decent Mauricio Herrera and then suddenly packed it all in. Was training with Freddie Roach.

Yes. I remember last we saw of him was on the Canelo-Khan unsercard. I remember there being some controversy on the scorecards. He won all rounds on all cards or something.
Re: Promising boxers that disappeared/walked away
Jimmy thought he could blast Sims out, went at him like a whirling dervish, no plan b that night, the tough Welshman tucked up, took his lumps and the Eastender pretty much done himself punching himself out.bennie wrote: ↑24 Aug 2018, 08:47 Jimmy got cocky against Sims by dropping his arms and he paid the price in the days when Welsh featherweights were all iron men. Saw in the brum mail Joe was hit by a car or in a car accident and suffered skull fractures, apologies if info is wrong but states has been refused a license but from what I read they have stated will fight abroad if needs be. Saw all his fights and although early looked very promising can never be be to carefull though, then again look at crollaleejonesjnr wrote: ↑24 Aug 2018, 06:14How s father posts on here, I seem to recall he said on a thread that he will be back soon.

Waiting for his contract with FW to run out. He’s apparently had fight after fight fall through.
He needs to get back in the ring, got barred from my local recently for causing havoc.

Haven't seen that fight for ages. It was a great contest. Sammy Sims was super fit and very strong back then.
Haven't seen him for a while, but I used to see a lot of Sammy. He was doing a bit of management and coaching and tried his hand at promoting too.
I had a lift off him Birmingham once and he kept stopping at petrol stations and sticking like £3 in.
We must have stopped 3 times on the way and I ended up asking him why the fornicate he didnt just put 20quid in? His rationale was its too much money and its cheaper to put £3 in than 20.
We literally ran out of petrol on the way home. He had spent about 10 miles putting the car in neutral and just coasting along, convinced that by dping that we could get all the way back to Newport.
He's a real character.

There’s a story about him knocking a bar full of people out on holiday and that’s when someone saw him and got him into boxing.

was a junior am star, and then as a senior won gold at commonwealths and silver at euros. didnt make the olympics but still very good am credentials. turned pro but didnt seem to get much backing and went 5-0 with a few fights in spain, then fought an 11-0 yank in the yanks hometown and lost a split. won one more fight after that and retired at 25 at 6-1. i got the impression he was good enough to be a player at domestic level. think he might have had brain scan issue?
Weaver is still boxing pro under the British and Irish Boxing authority (BIBA)
he won a commonwealth or international title or something along and Lines with professional boxing Council (pbc)
he seems to be making a go of it although the boxing board he is boxing for ain't very safe but they can box for the world boxing Foundation titles and the IBF titles
Re: Promising boxers that disappeared/walked away
Egor Mekhontsev.....had him tabbed as a cert to win a belt. Was certainly on his way, won it all as an AM them disappeared. Also would live to know what happened to the guy who battered fowler at the Olympics. He turned pro, won a few fights then disappeared.
