Look, I understand the assumption you’ve made, and it doesn’t sound unreasonable, but the point I’m making is that there is an industry-standard 10% trainer fee that nearly all fighters pay their trainers.

However, we don’t really know what the trainers of the worlds’ biggest earning fighters command per bout, because that information is almost never disclosed.

I strongly suspect that trainers who have been with their fighters for years (from the very start of their careers) such as Virgil Hunter with Andre Ward, Robert Garcia with Mikey Garcia, Derrick James with Errol Spence Jr. and Kenny Porter with Shawn Porter, then they will/would have usually all earned roughly 10% per bout.

When a trainer initially links up with an established fighter, already commanding huge sums, then it’s likely they’ll only receive a flat fee.

Trainers usually end up being unfairly treated, because when a fighter loses a fight, they often take the blame and will lose their jobs immediately.

And when a fighter becomes established and starts earning mega-bucks, then the trainer will usually lose their job anyway, because the boxers they train want to keep all the money they’ve earned for themselves, whilst conveniently forgetting that they wouldn’t be commanded such huge sums in the first place without receiving guidance from the very individuals they’ve fired.

This is the common explanation provided by boxing insiders.

Abel Sanchez has been with Golovkin for eight or nine years and has received the customary 10% trainer fee per bout during their time working together.

Now that GGG has signed a nine-digit deal with DAZN, Gennady allegedly wanted Sanchez to reduce his fees to 2%, which has resulted in their split.

Can anyone really say for certain that Abel Sanchez didn’t help GGG achieve his sporting goals and gain financial success?

Is it wrong for Sanchez to feel that he’s entitled to a slice of the cake he helped bake or does he only deserve to receive a few crumbs?
