Shades of Kalan and Wilt.
Shades of Kalan and Wilt.
He was comparing Kalan's obsession with Wilt to Nile's obsession with Page. Pretty apt.Tony1244 wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 10:09 Page was certainly a solid top 10 contender. I don't recognize that he was champion, because Holmes was at the time. If I have to recognize Page and Dokes as champion, what about Monte Masters? Where does it end?
Never heard drug rumors about Page, but perhaps food was his drug that kept him from being better.
Either way you can't compare Wilt, Too Tall or Butterbean to Page, those 3 were never top 50, much less top 10.
I was obsessed with Leon and Duane Bobick in the day so what do I know?Onetimeonly wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 10:32He was comparing Kalan's obsession with Wilt to Nile's obsession with Page. Wilt came as close to beating Ali as Page did to beating Chaplin. Two horrific robberies. I've never loved a fighter enough to defend stuff like that, but yes, Page would have battered Wilt. Didn't like Bobick, but I was down with Leon. Earnie was my fav then.Tony1244 wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 10:36I was obsessed with Leon and Duane Bobick in the day so what do I know?Onetimeonly wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 10:32

Nothing wrong with liking any fighter, but puffing the goods on Page is a far cry from the mental retardation of saying Wilt could have beaten Ali or Too Tall was a great HW.

You'd be hard pressed to find a 'white hope' type that I didn't dislike. George was a good solid pro. He pretty much just beat Page up. He got robbed in Louisville bad enough to get a rematch and then he got robbed even worse in AC. Page maybe won 5 rounds combined in his two victories.Tony1244 wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 10:47Onetimeonly wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 10:40

If I saw Page vs Chaplin I don't remember it. ) Wouldn't surprise me at all, Clancy called guys like Chaplin "cuties." Chaplin retired Duane Bobick. Heard Chaplin was a fairly smart dude.
I never liked Page either, man he was in some dull fights. Why didn't you like Duane?
I just watched a couple rounds of Chaplin-Page on youtube. George was taking it to him. I'd love to find Chaplin-Bobick.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 10:54You'd be hard pressed to find a 'white hope' type that I didn't dislike. George was a good solid pro. This is a poor rationale for not recognising Page or similar as champs. Ali very nearly fought Weaver instead of Holmes and thus would have legitimized the WBA line. WBA champs like Weaver, Spoon and Bonecrusher gave Holmes hell and it's not hard to envisage Coetzee, Dokes and Page doing at least as well, if not better. Holmes ditched a WBC belt for easier fights than Page. Is Pinklon Thomas not a champ, even thought he schooled Spoon who arguably beat Holmes and won Holmes' green strap?
I didn't know someone finally uploaded those fights. Never saw the Bobick fight., Shavers/Chaplin was my first live event.Tony1244 wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 10:59I just watched a couple rounds of Chaplin-Page on youtube. George was taking it to him. Certainly not saying the above names couldn't give Holmes a good or even very close fight on a good night; Terrible Tim certainly did. All the above were legit contenders. But to be champion you have to beat the man. Norton should have won his 3rd fight with Ali, but didn't,Tuan_Jim wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 11:07This is a poor rationale for not recognising Page or similar as champs. I'm not a Greg Page nut like Nile is btw, I'm just trying to be fair.
How did that fight go?Onetimeonly wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 11:09I didn't know someone finally uploaded those fights. Never saw the Bobick fight., Shavers/Chaplin was my first live event.
Not well for Shavers. Basically just showed up for a check.Tony1244 wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 11:22How did that fight go?Onetimeonly wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 11:09

Champion implies someone is the best, Greg Page holding a belt doesn't make him the best fighter in the division.
Incredible you saw Shavers fighting in the flesh. Was the famed power in evidence at all?
Do you know the ultra rare Greg Page vs Larry Alexander fight has been uploaded to youtube?
You can see the Chaplin/Bobick KO if you watch the pre-fight to Page/Chaplin on Youtube.Tony1244 wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 10:59I just watched a couple rounds of Chaplin-Page on youtube. George was taking it to him. I'd love to find Chaplin-Bobick.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 10:54

True, but the same applies to Michael Dokes, John Tate, Riddick Bowe, and argualby Gerrie Coetzee and Tim Witherspoon. And Milton McCrory, who would've beaten Donald Curry had they fought in early 1983.Cojimar 1946 wrote: ↑20 Dec 2019, 12:36Champion implies someone is the best, Greg Page holding a belt doesn't make him the best fighter in the division.
