A friend of mine has started training lads to fight unlicensed, he says unlicensed is the new amateur game for many men as the amateur game really is aimed at young fighters nowdays.

Any decent amateur gym won't turn away fighters purely because of their age.

They will not however, waste their time on guys who aren't fully committed to the cause.

Sometimes it will take a few months of proving you are going to come every session and give it your all before trainers take you seriously.

Ive trained Am for the past few years. It's nowt to do with trainers taking me seriously or commitment. The point I was making is lads my age (26) are more inclined to look at fighting in these shows and picking up £500 than donning the headguard fighting kids who are fit as you like. How many of the English am champs last year were over, say, 23?

Also the scoring in the am game is a joke and it's run in such a "silly" and old way. The same lad who fought the other week unlicenced was banned for 6 months in the ams for taking off his vest in the ring after a fight.

For further evidence just look at how the boxing purists on here are rating the olympic boxing. How do you think casual fans rate it if even the hardened fans are turned off. Christ, its supposed to be the best display of amateur boxing on the globe.

I thought you were suggesing that the amateur clubs won't give an older "newbie" the time of day based purely on his age!

The Amateur game certainly has it's faults I agree and the Olympic Boxing has been pretty disappointing.
The oldest finalist in last season's ABA's was Damien Campbell in the Super Heavies, and he is about 32 I think.

The 4 unlicensed shows I have been too have all been littered with dodgy "hometown" decisions and complete mismatches!
I can see why some fellas have go though. Make a few quid, which you don't in the amateurs(although I have known different!)and you also get to have entrance music too!

Appreciate the SHW was 32, but what were the other ages. Certainarly in Wales we had a big crop of 18-23 year olds winning most weights. A couple of older lads at the heavy end of the scale, but thats to be expected.

I knew a doorman, hard as nails. Hadnt seen him in years until I was at B & Q one day. A lad picked up a power tool and shot out the door. The security man ran out after him and got him before he left the car park. As the security man brought the lad back in the teenager said "how f*cking old are you mate". He was obviously amazed at how fit the security man was. "Over 50 he replied with a laugh. Well he was obviously the doorman from years ago, I recognized him straight away.

Then again - a lot of 36 years old guys smoke and drink and have done since they were teenagers - in a lot of cases
that is 20 odd years smoking and drinking which I suppose can take its toll on the body - so I suppose it is down
to the individual.

In that regard I have been lucky!

Yeah, I thought his 1st book was really good.... and he seems like a good guy to be fair. That said, as with all these "doorman" and "hardman" books.... they have to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Generally, the hardest boys are the one's you know nothing about.

True i agree with you there Eddie, theres probably 100's of guys out there who would knock out these supposedly hard bastards, the thing i liked about Geoff's books though is he didnt really blow his own trumpet like a lot of other hard men books .

Looking at the site i see they do white collar boxing nights, has anyone took part in any of these?
not just in that area of the country but anywhere, whats the matchmaking like at those shows? would you get fed to the lions if like me you've not boxed for 16 years, i only had a handfull of bouts and wouldn't mind having a look at this white collar lark.
Wouldn't want to get in the ring with a youngster who'd tear me a new one though

Go to Alan Lacey's The Real Fight Club, based in London. They hold some pretty good shows and get very good turnouts, from York Hall in Bethnal Green to prestigious dinner shows in Lancaster Gate attended by princes' William & Harry.

Pettitt beat wes sims in the final by ko.He beat someone who was to do with manchesters doors in the first round on points.Another ex boxer in the next round by ko and won by ko in the semis.
