They have a combined circulation of something like 18 million and are widely read in print and online, particularly by the people who make decisions in the country. The Times has had a huge jump in circulation since 2017 specifically because it was willing to hold Trump’s feet to the fire. CNN often just regurgitates Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post reporting and, as in the case of Fox News, is heavily performance art masquerading as original journalism. Most legitimate reporters don’t get a chance to confront Trump “live” because he has limited access to legitimate reporters and instead performs in front of right-wing podcasters and bloggers

The sad truth is that there will still people looking back fondly on him decades from now. Such is the nature of the personality cult. 20 years ago my parents visited Sicily and met people who were still Mussolini fans. Same shit, different country.

You can hear the same thing in Portugal about Salazar from the older people who lived through his regime. My dad hated Salazar.
