British Promoters, who will be top dog?
Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
I often have felt that I have been sold short by FW but he is streets ahead.
I did box on a few of Hearn's shows and he is a lovely bloke and if I could choose a promoter I would go with him

Sorry "BigMark" as professional and as good as their shows are - they want to do things properly and the sad thing is - therein lies their downfall.BIGMARK wrote:i would like to think it will be Hayemaker as i like what they are doing with their shows but feel it still will be allegedly allegedly.
Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
Warren still for me, no matter how good the cards are that the other promoters put on, Warren is always going to draw top prospects to his stable because of the money making potential. Currently Khan is the only big star he has at the moment until the olympians get into more meaningful fights.
Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
Warren is still the guy if you want to actually earn a decent crust out of boxing and get the exposure needed to cross over from being a 'boxing fans' fighter to a 'mainstream' sports fans fighter.
Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
I think Hennessy will bounce back from this bit of bad PR. His ITV shows are excellent.... Maloney is making huge inroads also and the Irish market he is tapping into is an excellent idea.
In this credit crunch time, its about bums on seat.... and with Maloney and Hennessy the undercard is the guy. Warren talent bed is getting increasingly thin. He now only has only 2 marketable guys at the present (Mitchell and Khan) - both very much unproven at world level.
Sure he has the Olympians - but the sport is completely different, who knows what they will turn out like a massive gamble.
Hearn doesn't seem to care a shit unless its prizefighter - which I think is begining to look stale.

I have no doubts whatsoever - Hennessy will wipe the floor with Maloney - Maloney in my view has been extremely lucky - have a look at his fighters and see how strong he is without the input of Steve Wood's boxers - in my view and I have stated it for a long time - Wood should dump Maloney and go it alone - then lets see how Maloney survives then - I will state again - without Woods fighters - in my opinion Maloney has no undercard and you state that is the key!!!
With regards your thoughts on Mr W arren - never ever underestimate that man!!!

I think Spud has an agenda again. I can see another slanging match about to happen.

I like what Hayemaker are doing they put good fighters in against good fighters they make good fights whereas i think Warren covers his prospects in cotton wool but he is a good promoter

Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
Frank has a good stable of his own so I think he will be the top dog soon. he is very close to it now
Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
Warren for me
Its about getting the TV behind you, and he does seem to do it better than the rest .. at the moment.
Hennessy should not feel too bad about Froch missing out, I think its more to do with the time it would be shown live here .. how would Warren have faired even with Khan fighting at that time of the morning? .. I doubt very much ITV or Sky would have been too fussed over that either.
Warrens stable looks pretty healthy at the moment with the new Olympians signings, its going to be a good few years before they get anything like a decent test, so they too will have a healthy looking record to sell in that time
And with Mitchell and Khan still so young, he does have a good few years with them whatever happens when they compete at world title level.
Hennessy has Froch as his star name at the moment, but as with Witter .. it could be very short lived
The others may have the odd decent prospect .. but lack depth and warrens experience to make the most of them.
Warren for the foreseeable future ..

Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
allegedly will be top for as long as he can continue to keep supporting his losses, however I don't think DeGale and co are going to turn it around for him.
I doubt that any of the above are making any money apart from Hearn, but that is from other sports. In fact I reckon the main money makers in recent years have been Hatton, Calzaghe & Khan.
What the promoters need to do is work together...but they would rather lose all their money than do that

i meant Frank Maloney
Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
Stu have you been to any Prizefighter shows they are far from stale I think that Barry hearn has found a niche market here. I know York Hall is a special venue but the atmosphere there has been electric at the three I have attended.stujones wrote:I think Hennessy will bounce back from this bit of bad PR. Both Haymaker & Hennessy deserve to succeed as they put on very competitive cards ( apart from Tyson' last punch bag) & if the Calzaghe's ever move out of Wales to promote they to will bring a different aspect to the scene, It great to have ex pro's involved in this side of the business so long as they don't get greedy & remember it's the boxers that make their profit so they deserve a fair shake
Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
i think warren will be at the top for a while , Altough he is not british brian peters is putting on good shows altough there not regular. Where would people rate peters among the others mentioned?

I think Maloney has been very fortunate - Yes he did well managing Lennox Lewis but unlike some would believe he did not promote him - as that was Panos Eliades where Maloney was a form of consultant - he then went onto Sportsnetwork where yet again he was a consultant and then he decided to go it alone along with his brother Eugene- for the record I think Maloney is a reasonable manager - clearly he knows the sport - I have absolutely no problems in stating that - but managing and promoting are 2 completely different things as Mr Maloney will tell you himself.
I will state again - and I have stated this for at least a couple of years and that is Steve Wood should be a promoter in his own right - he arguably manages the strongest stable of boxers in the country and Maloney is very fortunate to have the likes of Wood around - without him Maloney would be amongst the "also rans".
Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
Hayemaker gets my vote but with Maloney's olympians it could be him. Warren will still have fighters that are decent but I don't think it will be enough for top spot. I will be surprised if Hobson is still promoting in 3 years.
Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
I'm a little confused how the answer can be anything but FW?
Correct me if I'm wrong, has he not got more title holders, ticket sellers and decent prospects than all the others put together? Also the better backing from TV?

Re: British Promoters, who will be top dog?
Warren has made me an incredibly cynical young man. Unfortunately I am unable to support any of his fighters now, which is a shame. I don't see any of his new crop being marketable enough to break into the mainstream like Hatton did, which is good because it may divert attention to the real fights like Froch/Taylor (Oh the irony of that example
)
You see all of the top promoters put on big, meaningful fights. Cotto/Mosely, Pac/Hatton, Marquez Mayweather, the list goes on. Big fights that people want to see. That is my criteria for 'top promoter' - because I am a boxing fan. So in that regard Warren was never close to 'top dog' nor ever will be.
I understand why from a business perspective why he has to protect Khan, of course I do. But protecting real fighters - guys like Hatton and Calzaghe - was just unforgivable for me.
