More WBA madness!! Khan, Kotelnik, Ortiz, Maidana

Post by Old bones Ian »

Ok so we now have Khan v Kotelnik for the WBA lightwelter title, on the same night we have Victor Ortiz v Marcos Rene Maidana for the WBA lightwelter title!!!!!

The same fecking night!!

no wonder boxing is losing fans, i'm a boxing anorak , but there is no way i can remember who owns what title or for what governign body.

how can the WBA justify this? Its just a money grabbing situation.
why do boxers throw there hard earned money at these people?

They obviously created a title for Ortiz to protect Khan from him should he beat Kotelnik.

Surely Ortiz v Maidana is Interim and Kotelnik v Khan is the world title.

Or perhaps Ortiz v Maidana is Ordinary title and Kotelnik v Khan is super title.

WBA have been doing a lot of this, quite obviously more "title fights" = more sanctioning fees. It seems like they are doing their best to squeeze out 2 WBA champs per weight.

Should be some kind of rule, some kind of defence, to stop this from happening.

But,

Ortiz v Maidana - great fight, have to say.

Will the winner of Chagaev v Valuev be a super champion as they have effectively unified, thus clearing the way for another champion?

No the WBA are saying the Ortiz v Maidana fight is for the 'interim' title. but there own rules say that thwe 'interim' title is for when a champion cannot defend because of injury etc, but both these fights are on the same night!

Kotelnik isn't the super champion, he is what the WBA deem the 'Ordinary' champion.
So there should only be one title.

Ortiz v Maidana is a great match-up, but it should be a final eliminator.

no it would be like vitali vs peter - chagaev is champion in recsess and got a crack at valuev when he wanted but pushed the fight to get 1 recognised champion

i thought kahn was a voluntary defence and the winner had to fight ortiz i hope that is the case

I used to get annoyed at the WBU and the other joke ruling bodies, but i think its worse now with the WBA and WBC doing all these stupid titles, they are supposed to be the main guys, but they are turning into a joke as well

It is mainly the WBA who pulls these stunts, this fight will crown their eighth division with two champions and the best I can tell, not a single one is inactive due to injury or other reason to justify it.

I seem to recall this shite staring when Vinny Paz broke his neck in an accident and while no one wanted to see him stripped whilst he was dealing with the trauma of that it was not fair to freeze the title. So the made some guy interim champ while Vinny remained Champ as a kinda token kind gesture.

This is the single biggest scandal in boxing right now in my opinion. You have a world champion and he beats a guy in Feb and moves on to his next defence while the guy he has just beaten has a chance to become interim champ? What is the definition of the word "interim"? • noun (the interim) the intervening time. • adjective in or for the intervening time; provisional.

The term "interim Champion" suggest by its definition that some guy is champion in an interim period, ie the period of time that the actual champion is incapacitated.

This is clearly no more than an eliminater

They are shooting themselves in the foot obviously and so people need to stop giving respect to this but it will not stop. The only way to make it stop is for either fighters to refuse to be involved in the fights for the WBA (no fighter will do that, they like the extra money and to pretend they are a prestigious "World" champion), the networks to refuse to buy the fights (but networks like "titles" attached to fights but these are joke fights not actually involving any big ticket sellers or fighters with big fan bases so they COULD refuse) and promoters should refuse to get involved or accept these titles (but they wont because it gives their guy a title and then more leverage to get higher purses etc)

Fine, lets all stop pretending these guys are "World" champions at last. None of them are, they are all titleists of a self governed organisation. Hate to say it, but the Ring Champ and ratings grow in respectability every time the WBA/C/O/F/U etc do this rubbish

Plus Ring champions who have no obligation to fight the top contenders in their division, ie a certain Mr Hatton.

From what I have read, and excuse me if I am wrong - but it is not the WBA who deem Kotelnik the "ordinary" world champion... its boxrec.

Before this, the WBA's most recent shocker was making Chris John super champ and Yuriorkis Gamboa regular champ. John had done nothing to be super champ.

However, one upside to the mess is that good fighters want to fight for titles and more titles = poss more good fights.

Example, John v Juarez 2
Gamboa v Caballero

Kotelnik-Khan
Ortiz-Maidana

I would struggle to confidently pick a winner in any of these fights.

WBA are fcked up though. Bet they're in some big financial trouble and trying to squeeze every penny in a series of desperate moves.
