Corrections on Jem Mace' Record

Post by HomicideHenry »

1876- Bill Davis, won 9 round decision, Virginia City, Nevada

1877- Bill Davis, won the decision, San Francisco, California, March

1883- Lost by KO (unsure of the round) against Lord Charles Beresford; London, England, May

1896- he has a four round draw against Mike Donovan; New York, New York, December 14th

1897- he scores a six round draw against Mike Donovan; Birmingham, England, September 23rd

Cant be fooled with writing it all down, but here's Mace's link at CBZ:

Look at the years, 1876 and onward.

Most of those are bareknuckle and rightfully excluded here.

Certainly the last two fights I mentioned (1896-1897) were Marquis of Queensbury. The Marquis of Queensbury took over in 1892 officially.

Which is why I used the word "most."

But the Donovan bout of Dec 1896 was reported as a "friendly exhibition" and 2-minute rounds. At one point, Mace called time to remove his artificial teeth. Parson Davies was the referee. No decision was given, though most in the crowd yelled "it's a draw."

I would not include this novelty in Boxrec.

MQ were written in 1865; not sure when last LPR bouts were fought.
