I quite enjoyed that to be honest, he actually managed to encompass the emotions of a fight, for boxer and fan pretty well. This sport is not for the faint hearted and it is brutal.
The dread he mentioned is a fact in the sport, some hide it better than others, I have even seen Pete Buckley been actually sick with nerves before a bout, any fighter to claims not to feel like that is a liar.

I read this - and although I respect him for the amount of fanny he gets, he is a world class plum. Really not that funny, and his writing is terrible. Whenever I read his column in the Observer I'm so struck by what a load of shit he writes.......

I never criticise the author on here, but what a pointless, clueless article. All the florid prose in the world couldn't rescue this banal pile of shite. An outsiders perspective is fine, but boxers and boxing deserve better from a broadsheet. What are we going to get tomorrow? Alan Carr drawing conclusions on rugby's historical class-based paradoxes after stummbling across a game at Welford Road? That old literary edict which says you should 'write about what you know' has a lot going for it. Unfortunately for Guardian readers, however, Brand's ego (not to mention his commissioners) seem to hold no such considerations.

Also what he failed to understand is that Football and Boxing have always gone together hand in hand in terms of their working Class origins but he wouldnt know that would he!

I think he doesn't understand exactly why people watch boxing. He tries to paint the fans as the same as those in the old Roman days, calling for blood.

I don't watch boxing to see a man get hit in the face really hard and hurt. I watch it because I find it to be the purest form of competition. It is two men, out there alone with nothing but what God and years of training gave them. There is no team to fall back on, it is just you and your pride against another man and his. Great boxing is an art.

Funny guy, Russell Brand. Saw him live, and he was hilarious, and just as happy to rip the piss out of himself as others. He's fornicating irritating in prose though, where he seems to just try and shoehorn in as many big words as possible. While I couldn't really give a monkeys if he likes boxing or not, he's paid to be an opinionated c*nt by a lot of different employers, so he's just earning his daily bread I suppose.

Also, he was bought up by a single mother in Grays, so while he was always a Theatre Poof, he's hardly a posh lad, and all his education came free. I've got two mates that are Theatre Poofs, that grew up in the same grey, miserable bits of Plymouth as me, and that still love the Argyle and boxing, so use of big words and a worrying fondness for tight legwear don't necessarily mean you're not working class.

Im sure he would know that both are working class sports. I dont have too much of a problem with this article. Its a good thing to get an outsiders view

The man is a waste of time for me. Perhaps there are those who find him funny, but his knowledge and empathy with sport is zero. His overblown style is an attempt to mask utter ignorance. It is a sad reflection on the Guardian's editorial policy that he is given space in the sports pages. Banal pile of shite is just about right. It is bad enough reading his drivel about football without him landing on boxing.

I am a big fan of stand up comedy and went to see his recent tour.

The show started off well with plenty of witty tales and funny material but by about an hour in I was so bored by his self obsessed rants that I left with a good half an hour to go.

I quite enjoyed the piece but I'm not sure about his description of football as "unifying". It would be just as easy to describe it as divisive, considering the number of punch-ups opposing fans seem to end up in. It's interesting that most of the violence at boxing matches is caused by football fans. Boxing fans leave their violence to the men in the ring.
