I've been watching alot of fights on youtube lately. I love the chance to see fighters i've only read about. I've always heard about how competitive the light heavyweight was during the 70's early 80's and wondered about what fighters I should check out. Galindez is one i had seen pics of but never watched. What type of fighter was he? I've watched his fight with Marvin Johnson and he got clocked in that one. He had a decent reign as champ. Any other suggestions would be great!
I've LOVED watching Marvin Johnson & Matthew Saad Muhammad. Man those guys could fight! Real action fighters too!! The other guy that really impressed me in the one fight I watched was Yacqui Lopez. He had a tremendously varied attack. Great fighter!
Victor Galindez & Other Light Heavys
Re: Victor Galindez & Other Light Heavys
He was over the hill when he fought Johnson and had a reputation as a brawler when in fact he was cute, incredibly tough, hardworking and possessed great stamina. He also fought them all (bar Conteh), usually twice. He came back from a terrible cut to stop Richie Kates with one second left in the fight but easily outscored him in the rematch.wvboxer wrote:I've been watching alot of fights on youtube lately. He brawled in some fights (like his first fight with Richie Kates, or his title winning effort vs. Len Hutchins), but in most of his title fights he preferred to fight off the ropes, cleverly dodging and picking off his opponent's punches and then countering back. He had underrated hand speed and quick head movement. He was very strong, tough, and a pretty solid banger with both hands. He developed a bad tendency to cut as his career progressed, and he tended to fight in spurts, which led to some very close, hard-to-score fights during his reign. Had a reputation for getting the benefit of the doubt in several close decisions.
He had a very memorable two-fight series with contender Mike Rossman. In the first fight, on the undercard of the second Ali-Spinks fight, Rossman battered Galindez into a late-round stoppage to end his long reign. It was one of the biggest upsets in the division's history. Rossman was thought to be too naturally small (he was really just a big middleweight) and too fragile to handle Galindez, and Galindez elected to brawl with him, which turned out to be a mistake. Rossman stood up to his punches and then came back late as Galindez tired (he had reportedly suffered terribly to make weight). A rematch was scheduled, but on the night of the fight, Galindez refused to leave the dressing room because of a complaint over the judges. The fight was postponed, and when it finally happened Galindez boxed one of the smartest fights of his career, used all his boxing skill to outclass Rossman and eventually make him quit on his stool.
Galindez also had a reputation for fighting through injuries. He reportedly had food poisoning and a bad ankle when he beat Hutchins for the title, he dislocated his shoulder in the Rossman rematch, and suffered a broken jaw against Marvin Johnson. After the Johnson loss, he moved up to the newly formed cruiserweight division, and took on fellow veteran Jessie Burnett in a fight that would've put him in line for a title shot there had he won. Burnett floored Galindez a couple of times and won a hard-fought decision. Galindez retired after that fight to begin a new career as a race car driver. In his very first race not long afterward, he was killed in a freak accident.
If you want to see a great fight with Galindez, check out his classic first war with Kates. His cruiserweight fight with Burnett is also very good, and is on Youtube I believe.

Re: Victor Galindez & Other Light Heavys
I think it should be mentioned that Rossman was injured in the 2nd fight. He broke his hand and after a while quit. Though Galindez probably would have won anyway. The first fight was a case of Rossman really fighting a determined fight and Galindez being a little lethargic.
The 2nd Kates fight wasn't really that exciting. Was far Galindez past it when he got ko'd by Johnson is hard to say. He had a lot of fights, but not a lot of "wars", though he had a few. He was 31, getting up there but certainly not ancient. I think that Johnson deserves some credit for knocking him out.
He wasn't exactly slick, but had good boixng skills. He wasn't that hard of a puncher, but he could bang.
Galindez did win a close decisons, but for the most part the verdicts seemed justified. He fought a lot of good oppoents that he was just a little better than. A fight I wish they would show again was his close win over Eddie Gregory (later Mustapha Muhammad). This was best opponent that he beat.
He also beat Pierre Fourie, Jorge Ahumada, and twice beat Yaqui Lopez. Overall, certainly a better than average light heavyweight champion.

I watched Galindez Gregory on youtube. Not alot of fireworks. Gregory just didn't do enough. I guess after seeing pics of Galindez I expected more of a brawler. He was more of a clever counter puncher. He brawled in spots. I'll check out more fights. I also watched Rodrigo Valdez & Bennie Briscoe. Good middleweight bout.
