He was also turned away and paid up from Brendan Ingle's gym, when he was hired to spar with Herol Graham, but that did'nt stop him eventually becoming a middleweight champion, something Herol Graham failed to achieve. Fighters are allowed to improve and mature with age and Eubank was in this catagory. The fighter who beat Benn and Watson, bore no resemblance to the guy whgo was in the states for a short time, very early on in his career. Another example of a fighter similar to Eubank, would be Johnny Nelson, he lost his first three professional fights, but went onto become a world champion.

What a silly comment. The guy beat Benn and Watson, who were two of the best at the weight in the world. Moved up to cruiserweight and nearly beat Carl Thompson conceding a tonne of weight against a much bigger stronger man.

Eubank had some off nights and had some problems with motivation and temperament, but he was an absolute lion in the ring when pushed.

Benn advanced....Why did he ? After the draw in 1993, they both took similar routes.

Apart from the McClellan victory, where Benn nearly got knocked out early doors and perhaps only won because of the onset of McClellans injury, what did he do differently to Eubank ?

Eubank lost to Collins twice and Benn lost to Collins twice and to Malinga aswell.....

They were both at their individual peaks when they met the first and second times and both of those fights took a lot out of both men and they were never the same afterwards.

Thats the age i just got into boxing about 8 i was. Although i remember recently Toney dissing Calzaghe before the lacey fight saying the only world class fighter he's ever beat was eubank.

He stunk out Portugal against Ron Essett, but let's not forget that was his third fight in four months and he was coming off killing a man on top of paralysing another man. Against Rocchigiani in Germany he was magnificent. Against Henry W he made up for the previous four fights.

I agree he regressed after Benn I (other than flashes early in Watson I). The young Eubank who fought Cronin was up there with the Ali who fought Williams and Naz who fought Belcastro, IMO.

Johnny Melfah didn't get punched over against Benn (ABA final), Graham, Collins or Milo and Eubank flattened him, shattering his jaw in the process and concussing him for a week.

You both raise some interesting points, although (just to be rather too fastidious) I seem to recall that Eubank stunk the joint out against the cute Randy Smith, while Benn did stop Melfah in the 1986 ABA middleweight finals and was on the verge of putting him down when the ref rescued Johnny. Melfah was reeling all over the ring.
Coincidentally, another good amateur middleweight, Brian Schumacher, licked Henry Maske in the unpaid ranks.

I'd rather have this guy(conteh) fighting today than Eubank for sure.

Watching this fight, i'd forgot what a master boxer-puncher he was.Even though he wasted a lot of his talent, not many British fighters have even come close since.I wonder if we have the trainers in this country to produce a technician of that quality any time soon.Haven't seean a British fighter who knew how to slip punches like that in a long time.
