I was looking through the Boxing New papers reading the accounts on Brown and ran across a couple things to possibly change on his record. In the series of articles on his career from 1966 thru 1969 they always refer to his first name as Doyley and not Doyle. The 1968 Boxing News Annual which I have a copy of also has his record in it and puts his first name as Doyley.
All the articles and the Annual place him as from Catford and not Watford. The June 9th, 1967 paper in the account of his fight with Len Rocky James on June 5th mentions Brown is from Lewisham, which I understand, Catford is a district in Lewisham. The article in the Dec 2nd, 1966 issue accounting his first fight against Kenny Lewis does mention he's from Watford? I've started looking back through some of the earlier 1966 issues (I have 1965 also) to see if I find any accounts of Brown during his ABA career. So far in the Sept 2nd, 1966 issue there is a picture of heavyweight Bob Clements and the caption with the picture tells about Clements' ABA title hopes being dashed in the London Championships when he's stopped in the final by "Jamaican-born" Doyley Brown. So apparently Brown was born in Jamaica? When I get a little more time to look through some more papers I'll see If I dig up anything else about Brown's ABA career and residence.
A couple other things to mention now is his current record puts him fighting Bob Johnson on Dec. 21, 1967. The Dec. 29th, 1967 Boxing News says a Tony Brown (London) fought Bob Johnson. (Thus why the BoxRec shows Doyley Brown with an alias name of Tony Brown?) I'm thinking this Tony Brown is just some other fighter named Brown and not Doyley Brown. Later in the December 13th, 1968 issue of the Boxing News the account of Doyley Brown's fight against Bert Johnson notes that Brown had been inactive for 14 months. That would about jive with the approx. 14 months since Brown's fight against Dennis Avoth in Sept 1967. The 1968 Boxing News Annual record for Doyley Brown does not show a fight listed for him against Bob Johnson because they note in the list of fights for 1967 this Bob Johnson fought some Tony Brown.
Lastely, I found in the Jan. 17th, 1969 Boxing News the account of Brown's fight against Rodney Parkinson. It took place on Jan. 13th, 1969 at the Cafe Royal, Piccadilly, not on Jan. 2nd.
If I find anything else about Brown during his ABA career I'll write.
Thank you,
