Mayweather and his excuses!
Mayweather and his excuses!
Mayweather, our sports flagship fighter, and no doubt one of the most talented fighters in boxing today, and in the history of boxing. He has had a great career so far, winning titles in multiple divisions......... but is he avoiding the real fights we all want to see him in?
Many are keen to defend Mayweather saying he's only in it for the money and he'll fight whoever pays the most, but they are quick to forget that it was only in his last two fights against De La Hoya & Hatton that the mega money became a part of it.
We could delve into the past and trudge over who we think he avoided (or not) on his way up through the divisions, but skip all that to the present and ask yourself who do we want to see him fight from todays elite, and we should see a list looking something like this.
1) Miguel Cotto
2) Shane Mosley
3) Manny Pacquio
4) Antonio Margarito
5) Paul Williams
Its obvious to me that if Mayweather wants to cash in, it should be against these guys (anyone disagree with that?). Yet he appears to not want to fight any of them, isnt that ironic?
There was a huge calling for him to face Margarito some years ago, even Margarito approaching him in person and asking him to get it on, with Mayweather replying "dont worry you'll get your chance" yet it never materialsed. So Margarito did what Floyd should have been doing and fought Cotto and Mosley, and Cotto and Mosley fought each other, all the time with Mayweather being held up high by the fans and media as the true P4P#1, what a joke!
He now claims he wont fight Mosley as he offered him the fight 10 years ago and Mosley refused. What a tit. There was no big call for that fight then, Mosley was a rising star and keen to move up the divisions, as he did, and not look down to take on a featherweight, however talented he may have appeared to be. All this talk off how Mosley was not ready for Mayweather back then is bollocks, he had other plans at that time, and fighting a featherweight was'nt one of them. At the same time as Mayweather's offer to fight Mosley happened, Mosley jumped up to the welterweight division. He had other plans! Mayweather is now refusing to fight (avoid) him due to this.
I dont think he's especially playing a calculated game of risk v reward, i just think he's afraid to loose, his ego could'nt take it. I believe his eye is on Pacquio, but feel he should be fighting Cotto or Mosley. I am seriously pissed off that he has such a high standing in our sport yet in my eye's has been dodging the best for years and will continue to do so!
Personally, i think he will fight Pacquio after Marquez (assuming he wins). He has little choice IMO, he either fights a great big guy or a great little guy next, and my senses tell me he'll prefer the latter!. If he fails to take on any of them, he's going to be in for huge criticism and will be bordering on the kind of battering Calzaghe was getting which finally pressured him into the Lacy fight. Mayweather will want to avoid that, his ego would'nt like it, so he'll take on the great little guy IMO and will probably get hailed a hero by all of us on the back of it, assuming he wins!
What are your thoughts our sports flagship fighter. Do you believe he dodges fights, or is that just bullsh*t?
On a whole do you think he is doing good or bad for the sport?

Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
The only guys i would like to see him face is Pac and Mosley.
Facing Williams is pointless, since he will probably blow up to be much bigger in the ring. Same with Cotto, who comes about 10+lbs heavier.
However, Cotto "fans" are probably he most annoying in boxing. He should forget about facing Cotto, and let his "Fans" continue to whine.

Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
He's allowed a warm up as a comeback and as a warm up Marquez is a very dangerous opponent, he isnt even that much smaller than FMJ. He needs to focus on the opponent in front of him and sell that fight too. Be patient big fights will happen.
Pacquaio is the logical next fight though, it will sell out far more than any other fight. Plus they both weigh around the same in the ring and are both prime, both the 2 greatest fighters of the last few years, its the logical super fight thats harder not to make than make
And for the record both Margarito and Mosley turned down fight dates with Mayweather in 2006, Mosley did on other occasions too. Mosley will probably get his shot at FMJ if he wants it all the same.
He says he's here for 5 more fights, so hopefully he fights Marquez, Pacman, Cotto, Mosley amongst those.

Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
I think he'll fight Pacquiao after Marquez. Its the biggest payday and the easiest big money fight. Of course, it'll be a hard fight to make and personally I hope they can't make it happen for financial reasons. That'll force Mayweather to look at the 147lb names for another big pay day and its Mayweather Vs the 147lb division that really excites me not Mayweather Vs Pacquiao.
Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
I doubt Pac and Mayweather will face.
Since somehow, people will say "Mayweather is bigger than Pac" if he wins (or loses) imo.

Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
Yes, he is dodging fights and yes, it's because he could possibly lose and that would damage his ego badly, because his whole personality has been developed on the back of " Who has beaten me...." The same thing buggered up Naseem Hamed when he lost, he just could'nt take it and had to leave the sport, because in his own head, he could'nt face people. In his eyes, it tainted him, his talent and his legacy in boxing, if he ever had one to lose. Mayweather is in a similar ball park and that's why each fight is calculated. Some of the recent intervies have made Floyd look stupid, because he won't answer a question straight, when asked why he won't or has'nt fought the names you mentioned above. One thing is for sure, for Mayweather to be truely seen as the genuine p4p king, he has to fight Pacquaio, Mosley and Cotto after Marquez.

Marquez p4p number 2? probably. Also, hasnt Marquez won more rounds against pacquiao over their 2 fights than Pac has?

Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
Hardly an easy 1st fight back he probably will fight Cotto or Mosely if he beats JMM hes a great fighter but i dont think he'll fight Pac because Arum doesnt like Mayweather and wouldnt want to make him money
Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
He's the second coming of Roy Jones Jr, but even Roy Jones seemed to match himself better than Floyd at times.

pac, cotto, mosley, williams, marquez.
in that order of importance.
margo has blown it with the wraps fiasco and the beating he took off mosley.

Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
Simple fact is that he's always hedged his bets.
I want to see him tested.
People always said that about Jones Jnr but at least he stepped up.
If his skills are as sublime as he thinks Mayweather should fight Paul Williams or how about he fight someone like Kessler, Jones fought Ruiz and there was a 30 pounds differance in that one.

did you watch the DLH fight? He came in at 150, and beat a good version of Oscar at 154. That was a test, a pretty big test of Floyds ability.
JMM is a very good fight for an 18 month layoff. And its funny how people criticise this fight, but in the same breath cry for Floyd to fight Pacman, who JMM beat twice.

The Battle of two ex super featherweights? Nah mate Oscar was finished by then and he still nearly beat him.oilup wrote:did you watch the DLH fight? He came in at 150, and beat a good version of Oscar at 154. That was a test, a pretty big test of Floyds ability.

I want him to fight Kessler or Nard, Oscar fought Nard so why not Mr Money?
Than I would believe in him

Jon Saxon,
You're a demanding judge. Mikkel Kessler is a big Super-Middleweight and you want Mayweather to fight him? Christ.
Jones' 30lb jump to heavyweight and the 30lb weight difference is proportionally a lot smaller than Mayweather leaping from 144 to 168 or 175 isn't it?!!

"proportionally" how so David? Jones started at 154 pounds, so thats an 80 pound diffrance between him and Ruiz in real terms.DavidPayne wrote:Jon Saxon,

What Jones did was amazing, I dont believe Mayweather could do the same.
Could be wrong though.

Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
Way too much realistically to be expecting Mayweather to fight Kessler/Nard and far from the most important fight's out there for him anyhow!!
For starter's JMM is no pushover by any mean's and cannot be complained about by anyone and the logical and best big money fight for him after that is Pacquaio surely?
I can think of nobody else I would rather him fight to be honest!
HH

Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
You do realise as a 24yo Oscar weighed 160 on fight night compared to Floyd weighing 135 on fight night at the same age. Oscar's far naturally bigger and btw he fought at 130 a grant total of 2 times. Did you know Floyd's often been outweighed by 15+lbs on fight night against the likes of Castillo, Corrales, Gatti, Delahoya?Jon Saxon wrote:The Battle of two ex super featherweights? It's about percentages not pounds. The weight difference matters less as you get bigger.Jon Saxon wrote:"proportionally" how so David? Jones started at 154 pounds, so thats an 80 pound diffrance between him and Ruiz in real terms.DavidPayne wrote:Jon Saxon,

Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
Margarito is a cheat and should not be on this list. Who is to say he didn't also cheat against Cotto & Cintron too, not to mention the rest of his opponents? It would not be good for the sport for Margarito to get any future big fights, as it would only highlight again the disgusting behaviour of his team against Mosley. Mosley knocked the shit out of him anyway - personally I do not believe he is anything except a pressure fighter with a decent chin. His skills and defense are awful. Mayweather would have danced around him for twelve rounds winning a shut out, and everybody would have called him a coward afterwards for not standing and trading, so he was right IMO to never have faced him.

Re: Mayweather and his excuses!
I can see the point but I think everyone is massively underrating JMM as a comeback opponent after 18 months out, and I think Floyd will do well to win.
Secondly, Mayweather is not a big guy, no matter what you say. He campaigns at WW cause he doesn't want to drain, but there aren't many fighters out there who do that. He's definitely got a size disadvatage against a lot of welterweights.
If he takes JMM, then Pac, and beats both, I'd suggest the only fighter he's really got to fight is Mosley - two p4p greats. Cotto and Marg are big names, but not all time great material, and if PBF isn't hanging around those fights are secondary to someone who is essentially a LWW who can't be bothered to drain. (still like to see them all though!!)

I think Mayweather v Kessler, who would likely weigh close to 13 and half stone by fight night - roughly Rocky Marciano's weight and Mayweather could still make 140 pounds, or 10stone but would likely be 10-10 on fight night maybe 11stone would be a bigger ask than Jones beating Ruiz.

No it wouldnt, bottom line is he had never stepped up to fight a real big boy in his prime.
Not that this damaged Hagler's legacy but If Floyd is gonna flirt with heavier guys he should do so against someone in their prime and who he's not a clear favourite against.
I don't buy that "10.10" fighting 13st is an issue, it wasnt for Jones and wouldn't be for Mayweather.
Time for him to fight a real challenge methinks.
