Is American boxing still racist?

Post by Knucklez »

We all know the racist history of American boxing, from the times when national newspapers referred to Jack Johnson as a "savage" and a "coon", through to the persecution (allegedly) of Joe Louis, through to Ali's suspension, and on and on.

Is American boxing still like this? Particularly against African-Americans. Most of the top guys in the sport are non-black (Arum, DLH etc) though there are some exceptions (DK).

If so, is this a reflection on American society in general?

Yes, it is "racist" against white fighters. You can just look at all the "great white hope" and "great white dope" stories over the years, the ridiculing of the heavyweight division now that white fighters rule it, the snide comments of the Kellermans and the Atlases and the like.

This kid is irate because he didn't get the answer he wanted to get. OK, kid, yeah, boxing is racist and all white boxers should be killed. Happy now?
