Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
I was in my 8th grade science class when I heard the result. All the teachers were talking about it.
Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
I was performing at the Bethesda Maryland Marriott and watching the TV monitor from the stage....I nearly fell off stage with what I saw, and then for a moment assumed that I had mixed up the fighters based on my distance from the TV.....total shock when I realized what had actually happened.
Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
..i was at home in chicago with my wife and watched it on tv., hard to believe as the rounds went on, and i thought tyson had pulled it out with that knockdown but when douglas got up i thought he had a good chance but was amazed at just how furiously he came back.
i consider douglas' performance an example of a nearly perfect fight. the only mistake he made was letting tyson clock him for that knockdown.
( not a factor, but i did say "long count" when the referee looked to see if tyson was going to a neutral corner. i think it was at the count of six. i say not a factor because many fighters are down for a short second or two after 10 seconds.)

I was in a pub in London around lunchtime when one of the girls reckoned Tyson was KO'd. Didn't believe it at first ![[icon_shame.gif] :shame:](./images/smilies/icon_shame.gif)
Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
I was in denial. I was 10. It was discussed at school briefly. I thought
Tyson was the lord of the universe. I had seen him mostly while going
to my grandfather's who really thought alot of him.
I remember when I was about 11 or so, before he died, my grand dad
saying Tyson was what happens when a man 'lives like a king, when he
was merely a knight'. I had no idea what he meant, but it was a cool
saying. And makes sense now.

No idea.

At home staring at the screen in disbelief!
Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
I think he meant that a warrior should not live royally
until he moves to that level.
until he moves to that level.

15 years old and soundly asleep as it wasn't shown live on any channel. As boxing in general is a no-show on Dutch television - whether live or not - I watched the fight the next afternoon on Belgian TV.

I cannot remember where I was, I was four years old, but I can remember my elder brother being upset, shocked! The next image I can remember in respect of Douglas-Tyson was the Boxing News mag my brother bought the following friday, with Tyson flat on his back on the front cover!
Biggest upset in sports history imo! Douglas was a 42-1 underdog at one stage!

Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
Watched it at a friend's house and was busy telling everyone how Douglas faded in fights. When he got dropped I smugly basked in the glow of my prediction... It was short-lived...
Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
Watched this live on Sky and was expecting to be back in bed pretty quickly, it wasn't until about round 6 that I changed my mindset from 'he's lasting longer than I thought' to 'he's beating the crap out of him'

Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
I was at my friends house in MD and about 10 of us got hammered and watched it. The disbelief started early and after the 4th or 5th round I was like he is going to win. Not that I thought he had a snow balls chance in hell going in.
I had been saying Holyfield was going to beat Mike for years so in hindsight, I'm not as happy as I was then. But it was impossible for a Tyson hater like myself not to go wild. Even my friends that were tyson fans ended up pulling for Buster.
Awesome night.

Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
Out drinking with some college buddies in Champaign, Illinois and waiting for the news of surely another quick Tyson KO on Sports Center. Then the news came in with the pictures of Iron Mike on all fours looking for his mouthpiece. The whole bar was in shock...
Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
I was about 20/21 I reckon. We were all round a friends house who had Sky (i think it was Sky?). He was about the only guy around the area who had it. It was a cards night, loads of booze and a chinese.
Almost everyone was a Tyson fan apart from one guy who thought Douglas could win.
We were all (almost all) dumbfounded and gutted. We were saying it shouldnt have been stopped!

Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
I didn't watch the fight live.
The first I heard about it was in a park playing soccer,a friend of ours showed up late and told us he lost.
I couldn't believe it,at first I thought he had suffered some kind of injury or something out of the unusual had occured like a DQ.
Even all of these years on it still seems incredible Douglas beat him.

Re: Tyson-Douglas, Where were you?
I thought that the fight was just a filler in Tyson's schedule and took a road trip not even considering that it would be competitive. W-r-o-n-g
