That's just terrible news, one of the greatest fighters of all time, and one of the true gentlemen of sport.

He went through a bad patch when he retired in the 80's, but I hoped he was over that. Really tragic news if it's true.

Please, please let this just no be accuarate! I'm fearful it is though! Arguello was an exceptional fighter. If the reports are true, then Alexis, obviously, must have been in some sort of trauma or difficulty. Life can't have been going too smoothly for him!

My thoughts are with his family at what must be an extremely tragic time for them & my condolences go to them.

Boxing has lost one its greatest fighters.

RIP CHAMP!

An article from Sports Illustrated a few years back, and a few lines from it -

In 1984, when Alexis Arguello was 32, he sat on his boat in the ocean one morning and stared down the black shaft of a loaded automatic pistol. It was as good a place as any to die.

A.J. ( his son ) sat across from him, crying, begging him not to do it. Arguello cried too, saying that he must. There was no other sound except the ocean lapping at the boat, on which was painted THE CHAMP......

No resolution is possible in this life, a voice suggested. No, he cried—as long as he held this gun to his head, one resolution was possible.

"Don't do it, Dad!" pleaded A.J.

He looked at the boy for a long time. Twelve years before, on a humid night when A.J. was an infant, Arguello had felt a sudden urge to sleep next to his firstborn. A few hours later an earthquake ravaged Managua. The roof and walls in the room where Arguello normally slept collapsed upon the empty bed. Arguello laid down the gun.

No words can truly express this loss. He was a legend and a gentleman. I remember him clapping Jim Watt when Jim was introduced at the weigh-in at Wembley in 1981 (Alexis was in the background and there was nothing showy in his actions). A fighter genuinely clapping his opponent - unbelievable. He was also one of the most photogenic fighters of all time.
One of the best.
