Knockout jabbers

Post by Lopman »

In Jack Dempsey's book he complains greatly about how "nowadays" there exists a new punch called the "left jab".

He says that the old-timers' left lead punch was just as fast as the jab but was very powerful and could knock people out. It was called the "left jolt".

The power comes from an extremely awkward step which he calls the "falling step" and occasionally the "trigger step".

And he says the fist should be held vertically for full straightness and to land the punch on the three knuckles so that the "power line" from the shoulder hits correctly.

But essentially that near-impossible step is involved. If you look at pictures of bare-knuckle boxers hitting with the left hand you'll see it's actually exactly like he says.

The only fight I have where a modern fighter gets knocked down, let alone out, by a left jab is when Sugar Ray Leonard fought Wilfred Benitez. Leonard got in a jab to the side of the jaw which knocked down Benitez.

The shock on his face and wide eyes when he went down and the way his head jerked as the punch landed is proof that it was legitimate.

Aside from Sonny Liston, does anyone know fighters(with fight included) who knock people down with jabs? And only fights which were actually recorded on video and available.

You can't really take anything from Dempsey to serious. Everyone knows he put a horseshoe in his left glove.

Actually, it was plaster of Paris. (roll drums)

Hey terap, the name of it is Championship Fighting: Explosive Punching and Aggressive Defense.

I have the out-of-print book myself.

It's actually been transcribed to the net(badly). Only 16 chapters though.

Trouble is, this does not include diagrams. You should wait a few years and maybe they'll reprint it.

Didn't Frank Bruno knock out Chuck Gardner with a jab?

Buster Douglas knocked down Mike Williams a couple of times with jabs, on the Tyson v. Spinks undercard.

George Foreman knocked Gerry Cooney down w/ a jab.

And there was another one recently, like less than a month ago.

Simon Brown floored Terry Norris with a jab in their first fight. He buckled his knees with it a few times as well.

Aaron Davis dropped Mark Breland with a jab.

I'm reading that book right now "A Flame of Pure Fire". It's a great read so far.

I'd certainly agree with Louis and Liston, but I'd add Ike Quartey. He had a shotgun for a jab.

never saw him knock anyone down, but Roger Mayweather (the professional in the family...you know..the one without the slave contract) had such a terrific jab I wouldn't bet against his having done it sometime in his career.

Breland didn't get knocked down by a jab from Davis. As far as I know he was just shaken up by it in the 1st round. I also can't remember Foreman flooring Cooney with a jab.
