Fortunately, the wounds were not serious and the referee allowed the battle to continue. Although it was a survival of the fittest, Milligan was able to harness his vast experience to his battle plans, and although himself subjected to heavy punishment, had the tough Springbok hanging on towards the end” (Boxing News 8-1-58:13).

Burke “was beaten by old rival and fellow international Milligan. Burke, who looked short of ‘match practice,’ took a long time to get going and Milligan was well on top in the early part of the bout. He attacked continually and punched much faster than Burke, who boxed well defensively but had trouble getting the distance for his heavy counter-punching. When he settled down, Peter gave Milligan a really hard fight but his solid hitting had little effect on Terry, who continued to harry Burke relentlessly” (Boxing News 4-11-58:14).
May 11 (?) - Milligan “has been ordered at least six weeks’ rest because of a foot injury sustained during the Irish championships” (Boxing News 5-16-83:13).

British Empire (now Commonwealth Games) middleweight champion; Cardiff. “There was nothing to equal the Milligan-du Plessis bust-up for sheer fighting fury in the other nine finals. The first round was so punishing that the referee called a halt while the doctor examined eye injuries received by both boys. Fortunately, the wounds were not serious and the referee allowed the battle to continue. Although it was a survival of the fittest, Milligan was able to harness his vast experience to his battle plans, and although himself subjected to heavy punishment, had the tough Springbok hanging on towards the end” (Boxing News 8-1-58:13).
