He`s not really done anything that memorable to be honest. He stepped up too far against Haye and Lebedev was a class above hin aswell.

Beating Braithwaite was a good effort, but apart from that how can you build a legacy on victories over Bobby Gunn and the first ever billion dollar athlete????

He will be remembered as a guy who could bang, but simply wasn`t good enough against hard pro fighters.

i hold carl thompson in far higher esteem than i ever will hold enzo maccarinelli, and how many people outside hardcore boxing fans remember or appreciate exactly what 'the cat' brought to the table. and its only a couple or 3 years since carl called it a day.

18 months ago he was genuinly being talked about as being World Class, at a time when his gym was "on a high", Britain had several world champions etc.

Enzo is a nice bloke, had good power, decent speed, decent workrate, but couldnt take a punch and didn't have a real boxing brain. He was decent domestic and maybe Euro Class. The win over Braithwaite was pretty decent to be fair. The win over Hobson was a quality domestic dust up against a British Champion (and we all remember when people reckoned Haye was ducking Hobson )

However he doesn't have a real legacy and he was never a real World Champion, beating Hobson doesn't make you a real champ if we're honest. He did challenge the Undisputed Champ (Haye) and came a big cropper, no shame in that especially if Haye becomes a HW champion. He's also probably lucky Johnny Nelson retired and didnt defend against him because he would never have held a belt if that happened, but who knows maybe he would have done an old tired Nelson who couldnt get up for it.

I don't think his peak ability is as bad as his last 2 losses have made him look, I think his confidence has gone and he doesnt believe in himself. Plus I'm guessing he's lost Enzo as his trainer too so was in no mans land. Not really a time to take on 2 tough tricky opponents to be fair. Boxing's all confidence, just look at James Toney's demise after Jones schooled him to see that

Not sure why you use the term legacy? Legacy implies that he achieved something significant.

Won the WBU and WBO (against Hobson) - defended it a couple of times against, lets be honest unmotivated opposition, yes Braithwaite was a decent name but if you watched that fight you could see he had no ambition. Dominguez gave him a good fight until dropped by a tremendous shot. Other than that and the 1st Hobson fight, what else was there?

Decent British / Euro level fighter - gently brought along, padded out record, thats it really. There is no legacy.

Well thats how I will remember him, no-where near the likes of Eubanks, Benn, Hamed, Lewis et al.

I've met Enzo briefly at ringside a couple of times. When I told him who I was/internet writing, etc, he always asked 'Are you one of those who slags me off then?' and gave a sort of resigned smile.

I did a lengthy interview with him about five years ago when he was on the up - really loved his boxing history.

Enzo would have been a good British champion. He was never world-class. He beat a tired Braithwaite and a worn out Dominguez. Which are credible if not outstanding victories for a British champion with European/World aspirations.

He wasn't a world champion in our house.

A lovely fellow though, family man, kind at heart all that.

Had he been from Plymouth or Shrewsbury and trained there. He probably never have got as far as he did, having an Italian name and training with Calzaghe was worth lots to his profile and interest.

Loughran was exactly the name who sprang to mind when I read the OP, although Loughran didn't have a Haye-type fight. Although Macc lost conclusively to Haye, at least his involvement in one of the biggest domestic fights of the decade will mean he will be remembered at least for that.

I don't think so at all. He was an interim titlist who "graduated" when Nelson retired, had some safe defences and one decent-ish one against a past-peak Braithwaite, and then a gamble which backfired against Haye. He was shown up in that, but many thought he would win, and certainly given the talk of Haye's weight-making difficulties, it looked winnable. You can't really fault that.

Post-Haye, Afolabi was a big underdog, so it's not the matchmakers' fault that Enzo gassed, and then finally yes maybe Lebedev was a bit harsh for a "comeback" but it was a case of sink or swim. The Afolabi defeat was very damaging so they had to gamble, really.

Macca couldn't lace his boots.
Haye, Nelson and Thompson will be better remembered.
Of those three, Nelson and Thompson will soon be forgotten.

Johnny is a good mate, and he'll always be a Cruiser name for me, but Legacy ?

Nelson held the title from March 1999 to November 2005 (his last fight).
He also held the Central Area Title, British Title (3 times), WBF Cruiserweight, WBF Heavyweight, EBU Cruiserweight Title, WBU Heavyweight Title, WBO Cruiserweight Title (Undefeated 13 defences).
Now I would say that's a better CV mate - but Legacy ?

lets cut him some slack.....i was never a big fan and thought he was exposed by swaby early on but he did well with the skills he had and god he could punch.
He seemed a polite friendly family guy who got some good wins hobson,dominguez braithwaite etc.He will be remembered for me, as a champ who didnt reign for long and whose punch resistance went after the haye fight.
But he had a WBO title and defended it and there are plenty of good perhaps more talented fighters, who would love to say that they were world champ and cant e.g herol graham,pat barrett,kirklaind laing,derek angol,jim mcdonnell,dave green,sammy reeson,etc,etc
