Muhammad Ali vs Jimmy Young - The scoring thread
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ07gp2ZFOE
Ready when you are Kym (and any other open minded fans - no haters or Lard Arses please).
Round 1 was easy to score.
Ali did nothing and Young gave a nice display of boxing without putting anything on his punches apart from 1 half decent right hand.
Round 1 - Young - 10-9.
Thoughts:
(1) After 1 round this is exactly as grandaddy told us it was. Will it change as the fight goes on???
(2) Young's style was nice to watch that round

Open-minded fans only --- from a fellow waiting in the wings to beat someone up (or so he has convinced himself) for saying negative things about Ali's legacy on an Internet forum
Have fun.

Re: Muhammad Ali vs Jimmy Young - The scoring thread
Ok heres my stream of conciousness response on round 1..
I agree that round 1 must be scored for Young But did every judge do so? It seemed to simply be thrown away....can a judge look at such a benign round and gift it to the man who seemed to be tossing it away? Is he obliged to give it to the man who threw a few well thrown but ultimately meaningless punches and thus (in my estimation) truly earn the round? Purely objective this has to be Young's round. In an amateur fight there would be no doubt. Could the gobbledygook that Ali pulled in this round possible get any judges attention?
Question: If a judge chose to give this to Ali were they "in the tank"? Incompetent? Or just too subjective...in allowing antics to prevail. Is there any difference between my last two scenarios? In the tank is criminal.....but is allowing anything subjective into your mind as you judge equal to incompetence? I know I'm going to get a shellacking for asking, but I'm trying to dissect a judges mind here, and get some things out on the table as why we see the odd judgments we see sometimes.
I hope all three judges gave this round to Young, but would not be completely surprised if the "I'm large and in charge" body language might have gotten a vote.
A question I would ask of each round would be: If the fight hinged on this round....should it be the deciding factor? I'm ambivalent.
Ok with that said. I'll be more succinct from this point on. Young scored, Ali not so much, one low blow from young, not all that blatant, wild swing from Ali goes nowhere.

I have no knowlegde of how the judges scored the fight.
If anyone gave that round to Ali they are either incompetent or crooked. You can't be rewarded for simply walking forward without actually landing any blows. I suppose if Young had landed no blows either THEN you might have to make a call based on whose shorts you liked best. But that was certainly not the case here.
Re: Muhammad Ali vs Jimmy Young - The scoring thread
Collins. After training today I am here. I shall watch round 1 now and give you
my thoughts.
I shall take in the rest of the fight when I get home.
Ali vs Young Round 1.
Young 10-9
Ali did nothing, Young threw nearly every punch of the round. Not a really
interesting nor entertaining round.
Buzz
I do not know how anyone could have give that round to Ali. If they did, well
then they are touched in the head. Or worse. Unless they heard Ali throw out
some cool jokes as he was being hit and they thought that was some what
groovy.

Ali vs Young Round 2.
Young 10-9
Young was more consistent, though Ali had a spurt and a flurry, it
was Young that did more over all. The counters for Ali are not working
just yet...will he time that right hand and start to set more effective
traps for Young to fall into ? We shall see.

Round 2
Ali was a little more active than he was in round 1 but not much.
He seemed happy acting the clown even waving his hands in the air at one point.
Young was still landing the left and trying the occasional right.
Not sure why the ref kept getting onto Young about the low blows. They were borderline at worst I thought.
Young's round again 10-9.
Thoughts
That Dodge Charger in the advert looked nice. $3736, drive away.

Let's not rush through the rounds and get ahead of ourselves.
One round an hour is my speed; I have to do some work too.

I agree mate, I was tempted to head down to my local dealer.
I shall score round 3. after training. Just getting my old bones
motivated to get beat up for the day.
I didnt really see any low blows to be honest.

Round 3
Ali started throwing some 1 - 2's finally. Unfortunately for him most were thrown wildly and missed.
Young is still sharp; he put together a really nice combination after Ali missed badly.
Jimmy has nothing on his punches but he's still landing far too many for me to do anything other than give him the round.
Round 3 - Young - 10-9
Thoughts
Ali's entertaining the crowd by flopping backwards onto the ropes. I bet grandaddy enjoyed that Ali moment.

Re: Muhammad Ali vs Jimmy Young - The scoring thread
That Charger would have been a good investment. It's worth $4500.00 now...at least until Monday. Drive it for 35 years and make $800 on the trade in. My kind of wheelin and dealin.
Round 2 Ok second round I would give this round to Young for reasons you described ...but I see it as close should I be concerned if a judge goes the other way here?...what a steamless round...it looks very contemporary....the blows in question seemed low but not blatant....but unless the ref directs a point to be deducted the judges can not take this into account correct? If the judges were troubled by this could they call this round a draw? Or award it to Ali? Hey once again I'm fishin' for education.

Round 4
As Cosell said "at least Ali is throwing some punches"; for me though the vast majority were missing Young...
I thought Young's light counters were enough to nick the round.
Closer but still Young 10-9 on my card.

10-5 Young, I just rewatched and scored it recently and truth be told, the fight is an eye sore, can't endure it again. But it was a wretched decision.

Re: Muhammad Ali vs Jimmy Young - The scoring thread
I've seen the fight several times, I had Ali losing every time. It was indeed a robbery, not merely a bad decision as I would say of Ali-Shavers which was closer. Still, most older legends get gifts, especially when they are the champion and the aggressor. Young fought a very good fight, though not an exceptional fight, and he was in with a shot or borderline shot champion who was coming off the Frazier trilogy and who was fifteen pounds overweight. Young was not a big name at the time and Ali trained accordingly, foreshadowing the Spinks fight, and as bad as this fight was for Ali he was frankly lucky that in that condition he was not in there with a better fighter with a bigger punch than Young.
Young at 34 was even worse than Ali was at 34. In Ali's prime he beats Jimmy more comfortably.

Re: Muhammad Ali vs Jimmy Young - The scoring thread
Ali Vs Young Round 3/
Young 10-9.
Again a repeat of the other two rounds. Ali did some small
flurrying at the end, but not enough to justify a stolen round.

Re: Muhammad Ali vs Jimmy Young - The scoring thread
Ali vs Young round 4.
A better round for Ali. I wanted to score it for Ali, but I could
not convince myself he did enough to steal it with his bursts
or rushes. Young was the more consistent.
Young 10-9. Just though.

Ali vs Young Round 5.
A better round for Ali, he played the aggressor, going after Young
occasionally. I gave the round to Ali, even though it was not the
most dominant round for either man.
Ali 10-9
I shall await the return of Collins before i watch the next round.
Eating lamb forequarter chops...delicious...new season lamb in
be sure to try some and have some on your plate today.
But remember...if it isn't South Australian lamb then your missing
out...

Ali vs Young round 6.
Ali's best round so far, not anything pretty here. Just Ali taking
control against a Young that seems to be more interesting in
taking a break or resting.
Ali 10-9.
Has the momentum shifted ???

Round 6
Ali finally starts to make his size and power (relative to Young who has no power it would seem) tell.
Not pretty but Ali - 10-9.

Round 7
Very close round. Hard to split them. Depends if you liked Ali's inaccurate but constant flurries or the left jab and occasional right hand by Young.
I liked the latter just a fraction more.

The first 4 rounds of Young-Ali are a good cure for insomnia. Ali does zero and Young does 0.1
