Dean Powell & Others- Running a corner

Post by toomanyshots »

Sorry I had to start a separate topic as the other one is now a fight about ESB!

Why do certain people when in the corner think they have the right to speak over a trainer!!! A fighters trainer has spent days, months, years with their guy!!! When a fighter is in a corner he needs focus and not the distraction of too many voices! He needs the guy he respects and knows best, giving him instructions!

I think its ok for the other corner men to pass comment to the trainer during a round, but it's important for the fighter to have just the main trainer talking to him at the break!

The reason I say this is because the guy being discussed in this topic is severly guilty of it!!!
I am fed up watching the shows and hearing this guys voice over everbody elses!!!

I know for a fact that he was asked to leave a fighter's corner because he tried to take over during the 1min break!!!
Don't get me wrong am sure he knows his stuff but if I was the trainer I would be severly pissed!!!
Recent example Amir Khan vs Kotelnik! I know he trained him but Freddie is his guy now!!!

My beef concerning Powell is what he stated in his interview with Shaggy - it seems that has now been cleared up.

As a cornerman - he is outstanding - when he says something to a fighter during a fight its seems it is always relevant and needs to be stated.

Powell's knowledge of the sport and how things works can only be rivalled by very few people.

Excellent trainer and you have to say an excellent matchmaker.

I think that's OTT Spud.
If he is / was that good a trainer then surely he would have built up a stable ?

Hello Mate!!!

He hasn't needed to build up a stable due to the nature of his job with Mr W arren.

Powell cannot build up a stable of boxers he can train unless they are with W arren Promotions - as Mr W arren gets almost everyone who works for him to have some form of exclusivity with him!!! - even the security firm he employs.

Seriously mate I honestly believe Powell is very good indeed.

Is that the case Spud? What about Darren McDermott? Powell manages him and corners him but The Black Country Bodysnatcher aint a Warren fighter.

Spud,
Terry has a point.
In addition he hasn't always worked with Wazza.

I would also go as far as saying John Ingle is a better matchmaker, and a better trainer.

He is there for one night only, he is not the trainer so he should have the respect to mind his manners and allow the trainer to do his job!!!
He has been employed to do the cuts/hold the bottle!!! He should let the trainer do what he is getting paid for!!!

Again I respect the knowledge/experience of him but he should save it for during the fight and pass his comments to the trainer, then the trainer can gather all the thoughts he has to pass them on during 1 min break!!!
The other thing is I still feel he likes to be on camera too much-talks very loud and glances at it during the 1 min break!

i disagree.if you look at powell's c.v,he has worked with a lot of people over the years whereas ingle was born into, and remained, with the one style.i bet they have missed loads of decent lads at there gym who are just not compatible with "the ingle" style.

I am unsure how you can suggest that Mickey? - the output of quality fighters vs location, size and available talent pool puts Wincobank on a par with any boxing gym in the country (and arguably at the forefront).

The number of quality fighters that the Ingles have developed from scratch is hugely impressive.

yes, looking at it like that,id probably agree.i still wonder though,if some talented guys just havent benefitted from the way they work.also, sheffield is a big place and witter, graham and o'toole werent from there.lots more have travelled in just to use that gym(thaxton,hide,reid....).its obviously a style that works really well with certain fighters

Mickey,
Are you a fan, for instance, of Darren Sutherland ?
He left home in Ireland as a raw teenager and turned up on the doorstep of ?
The Ingles.
I think it's safe to say he benefitted.
Sheffield is smalller than Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham.
Trust me, talent does not get overlooked regardless of style.
Name me another UK gym that has produced more British, Commonwealth, European, and World Champions in the last 20 years.
Off the top of my head, at British level.
Brian Anderson.
Herol Graham.
Chris Saunders.
John Keaton.
Ryan Rhodes.
Johnny Nelson.
Junior Witter
Esham Pickering.
John Thaxton.
Naseem Hamed.
Kel Brook.
My apologies if I've missed anyone - (Glyn back off, you never did !).

Twenty six,

It is completely clear and I have been a strong supporter of Team Ingle and how good they are!!! - you shout for John a lot - for me Dominic is also very very good at what he does - but lets face it - its Brendan for me who stands alongside someone like Brian Hughes as the very best trainers this country has produced.

Out of the youngs uns - if you can call them that!!! - I would say Olly Harrison, Robert McCracken, and for me one who could be exciting as he learns the trade is Arnie Farnell - are the people who will take over the conversations on who the best trainer is.

I have just had an interesting conversation with Dean Powell - quite humbling really!!!

So the forum members who doubt that it is him - I can tell you now it is.

Just for those that are interested in what goes on in the corner in particular fights - sometimes even the world's leading trainers sometimes ask someone else to speak up in the corner if they are not getting through!!!

Just before the conversation ended with Dean - I did ask him to send my most fondest pal in the world Andy Ayling my kindest regards!!! :TU:

yes, they have a remarkable record, but,to answer your question,no i am not a fan of darren sutherland and considering the ingles turn over their favourites asap and he turned over very late,i would be suprised if they thought of him that highly.i would love to have seen him try the hands down approach though!

Agreed. There's no doubt whatsoever that Dean knows his stuff, and he is indeed one of the best cornermen in the country.

Nevertheless constructive criticism is a good thing and there are people out there who do not like his style, and they are fully entitled to their opinion. Personally I think he's top notch.

As I said I don't doubt his knowledge or experience especially when I can tell he loves the game but for me he is too overwhelming in the corner!!!
Again as I said, a trainer has spent days, months, years with their fighters & for somebody to muscle in at the break well whats the point of the trainer!
Am sure if he had trained a fighter over a long time he would not be happy to be overuled in the corner!!!

Have you thought for one minute that Powell has his say here and there to assist the trainer ??

Perhaps due to the trainers inexperience or - simply due to a fight perhaps not going to plan and there needing to be a Plan B which the assistant trainer in the corner may bring with his insight.

There are many good trainers - absolute fantastic at all of the technical stuff - however they may not be good talkers and as such someone else in the corner who can talk sense is a good thing.

Another trail of thought is - perhaps the trainer has said to Powell - "I am not getting through to him - have a word will you??" :TU:

I think he's a good cornerman also, I only hope people who have been critical of him in the past do not suddenly change their tune because he now posts here (and that being the only reason). I hope people stick to their opinion and that Dean's actions doing his job proves them wrong.

Reading Toomanyshots views... I can see his point. For me, it can sometimes be the difference (e.g. Calzaghe vs Hopkins it was useful), although I did think his imput in the Khan vs Kotelnik fight towards the end was a hinderance.... mainly because whatever Freddie was saying, it was working.

Going on a side issue, but maybe relating (and I don't think many will like what I am going to say) but I when Thaxton won the EBU title - I did think Ingle's presence did steal the thunder and praise of Thaxton's current training team, it was their moment of glory. Yes, Ingle has played a big part in Thaxton's career and I am sure it wasn't intensional, but I kept thinking "why isn't Thaxton's current trainer behind Jon now".

Mickey,
You are so wrong about Darren.
He was highly thought of.
He was nearly as poor a secret down at Wincobank as Kel Brook.
For family reasons - not boxing - he went home to Ireland, and continued to box in the vest.
