U.S. Championships

Post by wouter »

Mike DeLisa mentioned the possibility of phony bouts on Biff Cline's record. Reportedly at least 11 of 56 fighters to compete in the Championships were found to have padded records, they include:

Ike Fluellen: 2 phony wins in '76
Paddy Dolan: 4 phony wins in '75
Hilbert Stevenson: 5 phony wins in '76
Anthony House: 7 phony wins in '75/'76

Among the other with questionable credentials: Mike Colbert and Juan Cantres.

Yup -- and those falsified records appeared in the Ring Record Books, which is why I started keeping my own records in the first place (encouraged by such role models as Flash Gordon and Hank Kaplan!)

The Ring Record Books of the mid-1970s, those under the editorship of Johnny Ort, shouyld simply NOT be used as authority.

I ahven't checked, but I am SURE that those bogus records have been added to Boxrec, at least in part.

I've got the RRB 1979, which has the records of Cline, Stevenson, Colbert, Dolan and Cantres. John Ort had nothing to do with the recordbook by then, but I don't know if the phony bouts were copied from earlier editions.

They were never deleted. You can compare them with the 77 RRB, where they first popped up.

What about the fights recently added for Kenny Weldon?

Comparing the 1976 and 1978 RRB's the records are identical up to 1975. If anything nefarious was going on, it wasn't related to the ABC scandal.
