Mayweather Marquez 24 7 Episode 3
Re: Mayweather Marquez 24 7 Episode 3
I'm starting to get really hyped for this fight.
if Marquez can take Mayweather's power (and the rest might have done PBF good in that respect) - then he stands a chance. Mayweather doesn't like fast fighters, DLH showed that and Marquez is quicker than 154 lbs Oscar.

Great stuff
was just about to put this up myself but you beat me to it.
This has been one of my Fave 24/7's so far and got me looking forward to the fight much more than before watching these episodes.

Marquez struggled with Pacquaios power, down and hurt in both fights. Rocked against Diaz. Down against Barerra. I doubt he can take Mayweathers power. Mayweather got Oscars respect and buckled his legs at one stage at 154.stujones wrote:I'm starting to get really hyped for this fight.

Marquez is fast, but nowhere near Floyds speed. In fact, Floyd will make him look like a snail in the ring imo. Diaz looked fast against Marquez but against Malignaggi he looked slow. I'm afraid marquez will be beaten to the punch regularly. If he tries to push the fight and come at Floyd, he'll find himself getting even more of a hiding and taking flush punches.
The fact is, Floyd is better or at least just as good as Marquez, in every department.

From the footage I've seen, Floyd looks very sharp in training. The layoff, although we will not know for certain until fight night, does not appear to have made a difference to his skills, speed, reflexes, movement, etc. Mayweather looks stronger than before!
I think he will TKO Marquez! Too accurate, too sharp for JMM, who has been getting hit more often in his recent fights than he has ever done!

I dont see how anyone could watch these HBO documentaries and not want to watch the fights they showcase - they draw you in completely - the production values and the story they tell make compelling viewing.
Can't wait for this fight - I just hope that JMM (a great fighter in his own right, albeit in much lower weight classes) can make it competitive..

My worry is the power as you say, and I do think Floyd will be to powerful.opticald wrote:Marquez struggled with Pacquaios power, down and hurt in both fights. Rocked against Diaz. I agree that Floyd is faster than Marquez, but still struggles with fast fighters himself. They don't have to be FASTER than him, but if your fast enough to put him off his game - then you have him in trouble.
Oscar showed that Floyd is beatable, Floyd is undoubtedly faster than the 154 old version of Oscar that he faced. However, Oscar was fast enough to put him off his game, to get him out of his rhythmn that he needs. Marquez is also faster than DLH, so fast enough to put him off his rhythmn. Whose the fastest isn't the thing with the speedsters, but who has enough speed to put a fighter of his game. Pacquiao is undoubtedly quicker than Marquez, but Marquez had enough speed to put Pac Man off his game (Marquez's speed was more a problem for Pac, than Pac speed was for Marquez) - Mosely and Forrest had a similar thing. It was Oscar's speed that gave Mayweather problems - not his strength.
I still think Floyd will be to big - but if this has gone 5/6 rounds and it is still competitive and Floyd hasn't made a dent... then Marquez might start picking up in confidence.

Unfortunately the Jones Jnr vs Calzaghe one was the worst 24/7 by far. Jones was just pissing about with his fat friend - didn't look ambitious at all.TerribleTerry wrote:I dont see how anyone could watch these HBO documentaries and not want to watch the fights they showcase - they draw you in completely - the production values and the story they tell make compelling viewing.

JMM has a quality jab and great timing through his counter punching ability. His multiple jabs and ability to time his punches to perfection should somewhat off set Mayweathers advantage in raw speed. If JMM can gain a foothold in the fight it could force 'Money' into utilising his exceptional ability and fitness to win. I hope that the Mexican legend can force him to dig deep.

Re: Mayweather Marquez 24 7 Episode 3
it's a good point. I thought there was a stage in the Oscar fight where Floyd looked vulnerable. Not vulnerable in a sense that he was going to get hurt or KO'd, but vulnerable in a sense that he was going to get outworked in the fight. But he adjusted as he always does and won the fight on my scorecard.stujones wrote:My worry is the power as you say, and I do think Floyd will be to powerful.opticald wrote:Marquez struggled with Pacquaios power, down and hurt in both fights. What Marquez does bring is accuracy, so he probably will be finding the target more than any of Floyds recent opponents. And Marquez is great at adjusting himself. he could be the one doing who finally figures Floyd out!
However, I know what Floyd strategy will be in the fight. Potshot for the first 6-7 rounds and put them in the bank. I expect him to have enough power to hurt Marquez with a potshot straight right or leaping left hook as he loves to throw (and throws brilliantly). That's what we'll see from Floyd for the first 6 or so rounds and then he'll start to mix it up a bit more when Marquez slows.
I think Floyd will be loading up in the first round though, to test Marquez chin. We all know JMM is a slow starter and I think Floyd will be trying to capitalize on that. Don't be surprised to see it over early. I just don't think marquez would have the speed to get near a Floyd who is intent purely on potshotting and is on his bicycle. And even if he can get close, Mayweathers defense will get him out of trouble.
It's a monumental ask for Marquez but he's not #2 pound for pound for nothing and he'll give it a go. If he's still in there pitching after 6 rounds, and has nicked one or two of the first 6, he might give it a real go. Both fighters come on strong in the last 6 rounds of their fights. It could turn into a fascinating clash of styles.
But I agree with your first sentence of the thread... I'm starting to get really hyped for this fight!

5/2 on Mayweather winning via stoppage seems very tempting, just can't see Marquez getting in with the worlds best 9lbs out of his comfort zone and been able to go the full 12.

Re: Mayweather Marquez 24 7 Episode 3
The closer this gets, and the more I see of Mayweather on 24/7, the more I think that Marquez chances of winning this are somewhere between slim and none, with slim slowly untying his horse, getting ready to leave town.
Marquez, in his fights at 135, looked to me to be at the very limit of his frame, and not he's being asked to fight all the way up at welter against a guy who is 100% comfortable there. So if Mayweahter's faster, and moves better and has a better defence, how is Marquez going to counter that?
Marquez is probably my favourite fighter right now, and he's brilliant, but all his cerebral ring skills won't do him much good at this weight, I fear.
Mayweather looks amazingly sharp in the gym workouts -- even more so than before the layoff, which I think has actually done him some good. There's a palpable difference in the hand speed of the two fighters, and I just don't see how Marquez can win this.

that isn't the FACT at all, i'm afraid - and i wish ppl wouldn't pass off opinion as if it was the truth, as if you are some philosopher or something. the difference is that mayweather is really a lightweight and marquez is really a featherweight, that mayweather can fight effectively at welter and that marquez will be bloated and therefore slow at this weight.opticald wrote:Marquez struggled with Pacquaios power, down and hurt in both fights. Personally I struggle to find an area where Marquez holds an advantage in the fight. I like to look at fights this way too. I mean, defense, chin, power, handspeed, footspeed, strength, are all for Floyd imo, accuracy, stamina, mental strength and ring IQ would be tied.Autobarn wrote:that isn't the FACT at all, i'm afraid - and i wish ppl wouldn't pass off opinion as if it was the truth, as if you are some philosopher or something. the difference is that mayweather is really a lightweight and marquez is really a featherweight, that mayweather can fight effectively at welter and that marquez will be bloated and therefore slow at this weight.opticald wrote:Marquez struggled with Pacquaios power, down and hurt in both fights. Re: Mayweather Marquez 24 7 Episode 3
I would give JMM the edge in heart (until Floyd has to prove otherwise), punch output, combination punching and - taking into account Floyd's fragile hands - punching power.
This is a very interesting fight and I'm picking Marquez by close decision.

Re: Mayweather Marquez 24 7 Episode 3
I would say that Marquez had had to prove himself in much harder situations, against genuinely great fighters. And also that he is a better FIGHTER. Marquez used to fight too cautious, but in the later stages of his career was more willing to take chances. Sometimes got him in trouble but also got him some truly outstanding results.
Mayweather does his thing, usually dominates in a defensive way and comes out unscathed.
Marquez did look a bit overwhelmed early vs Juan Diaz - Juan Diaz next Golden Boy (apparently), had fight in small ring in hometown, all the advantages for younger bigger guy. JMM did put on a masterclass and broke him down. It was a little bit similar to PBF vs Jesus Chavez. Chavez, similar to Diaz, gave Floyd some rough moments. Like JMM, Floyd really responded well and put on brilliant boxing under uncomofrtable, suffocating pressure.
I do expect Mayweather to win, due to weight and lack of wear and tear. But I don't think he's necessarily better than JMM in terms of skill. He's bigger, and his defense is better, but JMM is one of the very few to equal PBF in the skills department, IMO, and has proven his skills vs many different styles, in good company. I prefer JMM's punch placement, ability to break ppl down with varied shots, to Floyd's pot shot, neat and tidy defensive boxing.

Re: Mayweather Marquez 24 7 Episode 3
What was amazing about Marquez's performance against Diaz was the way he lost the first three rounds, at least, but Marquez was able to make changes to his tactics mid-fight. It wasn't just a case of coming on stronger, or him maintaining output where Diaz failed, which it is in most cases where a fighter comes back from early adversity. Marquez was able to depart from plan A, see which punches might work where he had failed early, and then through his timing, accuracy and technical excellence, make that work.Autobarn wrote:I would say that Marquez had had to prove himself in much harder situations, against genuinely great fighters. And that, my friends, is incredibly rare in the ring.
Marquez is awesome.
But I don't see how he's going to win six rounds or more against Mayweather. No way. I don't see how he can win. He might steal 2 or 4 on workrate, but that's it.
But please, please let me be wrong.

Agree pretty much word for word, Carbo. I'm still not sold on whether Marqy-Marq can take Floyd's counters, either. At lightweight he was hurt by guys because they were bigger & stronger than him -- I don't see how he's going to take Floyd's shots any better.Carbo wrote: What was amazing about Marquez's performance against Diaz was the way he lost the first three rounds, at least, but Marquez was able to make changes to his tactics mid-fight. Floyd won't stop him, simply because he hasn't stopped lesser fighters.
