Faruq Saleem-Richie Jero 12/14/02

Post by emile »

Over on the current scene board, a poster named joelnyc claimed that Saleem beat Jero by KO1 and was not knocked down. The basis for the KO5 result seems to be from a Beloit newspaper that did a phone interview with Jero after the fight.

Although I can't find any internet source from ringside that reports exactly what happened, there are many archived web pages which say KO1, and not one other web page that has the KO5 result.

Based on what I could turn up, I believe joel is right and Jero made up a phony result for his hometown paper. Was the KO5 result confirmed by the NJ State Boxing Commission? Can somebody solve this riddle?

Fight Fax has KO 1 in their record book and they get their results from the New Jersey commission.

Well that got changed fast. I'd also think you'd want to remove the 'Saleem knocked down' part too. Although I can't tell you for sure that he wasn't KD'd in the 1st, the only claim of this happening is from that same story. I'd imagine you'd want a corroborating source before leaving that in.

I will try to find out more about this and post what I come up with.

Thanks.

I am pretty sure that KO1 is quite accurate ... I remember using fight news, realboxing, and one other source to confirm it ... but I don't remember reading that Salem was knocked down. I won't trust Jero's paper too much, aside from the interview, but if you can find the article of Jero's win over Jordan Keepers (who's like 3-50-2), it's worth a read.
