Pan Am's

Yes I'm following.. But with one correction to your entry. Karl Dargan lost to Francisco Javier Vargas of Mexico 19-18 in his first bout.

I also agree with boxer0119's best fighters.. It really showed in the 112,119,178.. In the 112 US loss, Ron Siler has beaten Juan Carlos Payano in which Raul lost too. Raul's a good fighter but can't beat a boxer that boxes him. In the 119 loss, Torrence Daniels, (if this is the same Daniels' from Michigan) has beaten Andrew Kooner twice in which Samson lost too. The 178 loss DeAndre Abron has beaten Ramiro Reducindo in which Rommel Rene lost too. I don't even know why the US sent Rene to the Pan Am's.. He just got his tail handed to him at the World Championships He's not experienced enough in international bouts to be competing at these events. To the 106, 165 I don't fault thier performence, They both fought Cubans and Cuba is the POWERHOUSE of ameteur boxing.... Heavyweight is a tossup for best. Vargas got Knocked out buy Charles Ellis in the National Golden Gloves in Vegas this year.. So the best 201 can be anyone... Sence B.J. Flores turned pro.

Thanks for the correction, KO - they didn't highlight Dargan in the results for some reason, but you are exactly right. How did they come to name this team? I looked at some of the other national championships but it wasn't clear to me if there was a qualification process. Were choices made on a political basis? On the basis of who the best fighters were that were available to make the trip?

Anyway, yesterday's results. Three Americans have made the finals.

112
Final is Juan Carlos Payano vs. Yuriolkis Gamboa

125
Final is Aaron Garcia vs. Likar Ramos Concha of Colombia. Garcia beat Yosvani Aguilera Zamora 16-14.

141
Final is Isidro Mosquea vs. Patric Lopez

165
Final is Juan Ubalde Cabrera of the Dominican Republic vs. Yordanis Despaigne

201
Final is Odlanier Solis Fontes vs. Kertson Manswell. Manswell defeated Devin Vargas 14-12

Pan Am's

Estrada wins gold!
McPhearson and Garcia wins silver (Garcia being a shocker)

emile, the team was the 2003 US Challenge winners without Andre Ward at 178 who passed up this tournament because of injury.

I think that there's to many bad decisions in amateur boxing. It shows when it really counts. On the international scene we never have all of our best guys like cuba does. If the US establish the TOP guys in each weight class and train them all together more often I think when we send ALL of our BEST in EVERY weight class we would win alot more golds on the international level.. I hope the are fair in the Olympic Trials and not do the buddy buddy wins thing and send our best the the games..

I won't to say congrads to Jason for the gold.. But I'll tell him when I see him again...

.
...Jason Estrada outpointed Michael Lopez Nunez, 14-6.
...Nunez, the big Cuban, weighs 275#. I'm just wondering if you have his other measurements? Sure would like to know reach, height, & Amateur Record - and I've checked Boxrec.com - they only list records/stats for PRO boxers.
...Winning a Silver in the PanAms Superheavies (and losing by decision to a guy with exceptional hand speed), says he's got something! Should he turn pro and come to the U.S. for future fights? Will we get to see him on Fox or ESPN2?

Cuban fighters can't turn pro unless they defect from cuba. Tapes and stats are very difficult to get.
