Tyson Fury ready to prove he has the X Factor on Irish debut

Tyson Fury’s appearance on Charity Lords of the Ring can be seen here:

Heavyweight sensation Tyson Fury will be out to impress in Dublin this weekend when he makes his Irish pro debut live on terrestrial television. The unbeaten Manchester based heavyweight is a special attraction on the undercard of Irish hero Bernard Dunne’s first defence of his World WBA Super Bantamweight title at The O2 in Dublin on Saturday night.

Fury is already familiar to Irish viewers following a guest appearance on the celebrity boxing series, Charity Lord of the Rings last month (watch here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjgTv8eip2Y) and the 6 foot 9 inch 21-year-old is planning on making another big impression at The O2.

Fury has been matched with Tomas Mrazek, the Czech heavyweight who floored former British Champ Michael Holden en route to a draw in his last outing.

“I’m very proud of my Irish roots so to fight live on terrestrial TV over in Ireland is something I’m very excited about”, said Fury. “I would have loved to fight for the Irish Heavyweight title on the card but I can’t seem to get any of these other Irish heavyweights in the ring.

“I was ringside when Bernard Dunne won the title in March and the atmosphere that night was sensational. The O2 is a terrific arena for boxing, it’s like being in the Colusseum and I can’t wait to walk out in front of that crowd and do a real number on Mrazek.”

The weekend’s bout marks a quick return to action for Fury coming just two weeks after his English title win over John McDermott. That bout saw Fury go the distance for the first time in his 8 bout career but Fury says he’s ready to return to his knockout ways in Dublin.

“I didn’t perform to my best last time out,” admitted Fury. “The important thing was that I still got the win. I know I’m not the finished article yet, I’ve a lot to learn but I’m willing to put in the work.”

A rematch with McDermott could be on the agenda and Fury is confident that the scorecards will not be required second time around. “That was the best possible John McDermott and the worst possible Tyson Fury in that first fight. A rematch would be a completely different fight and I’ll stop him next time.”

Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy believes that McDermott is less than keen on a return bout. “On the Monday after the fight we offered McDermott a rematch for the chief support slot on the undercard of the Carl Froch and Andre Dirrell Super Six fight in Nottingham on October 17th McDermott’s manager said he wouldn’t be ready for that date but Tyson will have fought three times in that same 6 week period.

“I don’t believe Tyson is getting anything like the credit he deserves for making the leap from having only gone 4 rounds to going straight into a 10 round championship fight with a seasoned veteran like McDermott who is a proven, top domestic heavyweight.

“Even though Tyson was far, far from his best on the night he showed the tenacity, guile, heart and engine to prevail in a high pace championship fight and still finish the stronger man. I believe that had it been a 12 round fight he would definitely have stopped McDermott.”

Any comment from HS about the board sanctioning a rematch within 90 days. Presume you'll be bidding for the fight?

Not bad considering he's a 8 fight novice just coming from a ten round title contest in a fight most thought he lost just 3 weeks previous.

Yeah it's fine, the guy might be a serial loser but in all his fights he's only boxed two guys who have a losing record and he didn't lose to either of them.

Fury has taken his share of decent matchups and is coming off of a hard ten rounder two weeks ago.

Fury will no doubt look impressive and win within 2/3 rounds I'm not convinced by his power yet but he should have enough to beat this boy

Wish they would have taken that fight on the froch undercard, would have given the bill a big boost

The only reason McD would have turned that down is if short arms and long pockets won't pay the money again. And they will prob try and use it as an excuse not to fight. There is no way that Fury will take this rematch

Mrazek looks far from a good match up. Other than a draw against an a) very rusty and b) potentially very shot Holden he's a serial loser who will be hard pushed to make it past the second. Fair dues Fury stepped up a level for McDermott and it's good that he's fighting again this soon but if the argument for fighting such a second rater is that he's potentially still a bit tired then he shouldn't be fighting at all.

Let him rest a month and come back against someone who'll give him rounds and at least a bit of an argument. Otherwise, why bother other than to pad the record.

Prove he has the X factor ?? No. Prove he can beat a 4-22 import? yes, but I think he's already proved that.

- He gets paid for fighting an exhibition in his Irish debut. Take the money and run on to plans for the next big bout.

The McD rematch may never happen if the big offers continue to cascade over the coffers, and McD and Maloney weren't keen on the rematch to begin with. Young Ali was fighting Alex Miteff in his 9th pro fight, probably near McD quality. From then on he was in against good quality journeymen and young prospects which is what Fury needs. Remember, age at age 21 Ali needed a sleight of hand to make it past Cooper and Jones in advance of Liston.

I suggest a fight in Germany against an one of those prospects after the McD rematch. Fury could have a brilliant international base in a heartbeat if he's moved right.

Does Hennessy have any background of moving top heavies smartly, or is he just a convenient local promoter?

Everyone wants a heavyweight hope, and even though it seems Fury was "exposed" somewhat, this will drag on and on. I'm not impressed, I was never bothered about him in the first place, and it pissed me off that he got attention over the likes of John Murray. I can't see Fury ever going further than the Williams/Sprott/Audley/Skelton level of domestic roundabout. He'll probably do alright for himself in the long run, hopefully for him anyway, but I think he'd have to do an awful lot for us to believe in him beyond British level (which he almost came unstuck before even getting near). Forgive me for negative comments, etc, but I'm not so keen on the British heavyweights, never have been (Lewis notwithstanding).

Not a good matchup really but did you expect him to be given a tough fight? Boxing promoters are businessmen and Tyson Fury is making money for Hennessy at the moment as he's still unbeaten.

I say 3rd round TKO (Fury of course).

It's a PR thing. It's not a fight meant to progress Fury in any way other than exposure, imo.

Fury will win this in the first round.

Despite the pathetic opponent, this is actually a good matchup. It's so quick after the McDermott bout. I expect, if there is a Big John rematch, that Tyson will have another gimme match after this one, and then take McDermott.
