Lawton predicts Murray – Thaxton Thriller

Lawton predicts Murray – Thaxton Thriller

John Murray has been warned not to underestimate Jon Thaxton ahead of their British Lightweight title clash this weekend. The advice comes from Scott Lawton, the current English Lightweight Champ and a man in a good position to air his views on the fight given that he has shared the ring with both men in previous British title fights.

Murray and Thaxton headline at the Altrincham Leisure Centre on Saturday night with the Hennessy Sports event live on ITV4 and Lawton believes that Murray will have to be wary of the former British and European Champ’s power.

“Going by the form book you’d have to fancy John Murray,” revealed Lawton. “You would expect him to be too young and simply have too much energy but with Thaxton’s power you can never count him out.”

Lawton challenged Thaxton for the British title in 2007 and had some success early on before being stopped in seven rounds while he took on Murray last time out suffering a sixth round stoppage defeat under the relentless pressure of Murray.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Thaxton catches Murray with one because he still carries a whack,” predicted Lawton. “I still fancy Murray to win it but he might have to get off the floor to do it. Whatever happens it should be exciting anyway because they are both top class fighters and both of them love to get in there and get stuck into a fight.”

Saturday’s undercard features amongst others Bob Ajisafe, Richard Towers, Phill Fury, Kid Galahad and the pro debut of Manchester’s Danny Randell. Tickets for the bout priced £30 and £70 are available from the Ticketline box office on 0844 888 4402 or via www.ticketline.co.uk.

Really looking forward to this one, Thaxton will be dangerous early but Murray will take over after 4/5 rounds and stop Thaxton around 8-10

I'm with you on that one, anyone else noticed that the quality of Hennessy's undercards has decreased at his last few promotions? Still the main event should be a cracker.

Don`t think this will be a thriller.

I expect Murray to stop him inside a few rounds.

going to be a cracker this one. I think murray will win via stoppage about round 6/8 but will have to come through some scary moments first. I cant wait, but it really is a shame about the undercard.

Maybe the promoters are realizing that to get bums on seats in this current climate they need to deliver a top Main Event,

Sky have really been good so far this season

last season was terrible with Commonwealth fights

i thought the Thaxton fight was next week but seems not
should be good one with Murray winning stoppage IMO :TU:

can't wait for this. it has been talked about for so long. it didn't happen when many of us wanted it to happen. but you can bet your arses murray will want his british title back and that thaxton - back down at lightweight, where he belongs - will be as fiercely motivated as ever.

i think murray breaks him down, but thaxton has big power early. murray doesn't seem to have faced a big puncher yet, so this could be a very useful fight for him, a learning experience. the problem is, the power will be coming from the "wrong side", the lead right hooks and the straight lefts from the southpaw stance. what if he takes the big right hook that sparked melero or all but annihilated mezaache in one?

i know thaxton is a switcher, but he seems to do better as a southpaw. murray will surely have to get his positioning just right, get his lead foot outside thaxton's, to be in place and be quick to land. romanov, i feel, was masterful in doing this, and also used excellent feints to get thaxton off balance. murray obviously won't be the same as romanov, but he will be bigger, perhaps stronger and with a better workrate.

Im getting excited already for this one I see an absoulote war with Murray prevailing in the mid-late rounds but Thaxton will push him and do well but Murray will be to fit and fresh for him :bag: I like the new Smilie's

For a televised show, it (the undercard) looks very poor.

Sorry to say that, but it's Friday Fight Night (of earlier this year) quality.

It might be a thriller for a few rounds, what with Murray's tendancy to get up close. But I can't see it being a back and forth battle, not the way it would have been a year ago. Still a good fight, still one I'll watch (albeit delayed, with my Dad selfishly having his 60th birthday bash on the same night), but one I expect Murray to win in about 8.

Thaxton is 5/1 if anyone fthinks he'll win, go for it!

With a punch, it's certainly possible, and Murray's style does make him hitable!

The main event is a solid fight and you don't always get that with other promoters. I seldom watch undercards anymore, anyway.

Over the years Hennessy has put on some strong cards. He was going to put on Froch-Inkin, Witter-Bradley and Murray-Fewkes - until, of course, 2 pullouts.

There are lots of views on what will improve boxing. Stronger cards, of course, with good undercard to go with good main event. However, you would think Showtime - and all the promoters involved - are doing something even more important. And that is actually going out there and settling who is the best at a given weight. It's an initiative from Showtime, it's about US TV money, and they aren't responsible for the undercard, which understandably will be filled with local fighters or those belongign to the promoters of the individual show. It may take a long time, and their are a lot of different ppl to please, from different countries...

Provided we can view Froch-Dirrell and Abraham-Taylor on the same night on TV - because they are both on the same night, and both kicking off the tournament - then this would seem like a good start. You have 2 unbeaten world champions (ok, Abraham vacated his middleweight belt), in potential banana skin fights. I don't think these are "routine" fights at all. The style matchups look tough for the "champs", and of course the fights are important in the context of the tournament.
