Lloyd Marshall KO'd by Henry Flakes -Did this really happen?

Post by My2Sense »

According to boxrec, Marshall was KO'd by heavyweight Henry "Snow" Flakes on August 18, 1947 in upstate New York. Cyberboxingzone's record of Marshall does not list this fight. I searched through the NY Times' archives to find info on it, but can't find anything.

Marshall is listed as weighing an unusually high 190 pounds for this fight (he normally weighed around 165). He weighed only 166 two months earlier for his fight with Freddie Mills and 168 a month after the fight vs. Ezzard Charles. I've always found it strange that he apparently gained and lost a whole 25 pounds in the span of a couple of months. :o :-?

Can anyone shed any light on this fight? Does anyone have a contemporary source that confirms it happened?

I asked about this over at cyberboxingzone, and here is a reply I got from one of its posters:
This might be a mistake. In the 1948 Ring Record Book under Flakes record, it does have a KO win over Marshall, BUT under Marshall's record it does not list any bout for him on that date.

There was another boxer by the name of Lloyd Michigan who fought in the heavyweight division at that time and also weighed around 190 pounds. Michigan was from Detroit, Michigan.

Also in the November 1947 issue of Ring, which covers bouts up to September 10, 1947, it lists Marshall at #5 in the World in the Light Heavyweight Division. It would be hard to believe that the Ring would rate him so high after being stopped by 8-1 Flakes.

In that issue, it does list the bout between Frankie Best and Bobby Dare, BUT I can not find the Flakes bout.

It was also the only fight card at Hyde Park Stadium ever.

I have almost a full set of Ring Record Books now, sadly the more I double check them the more mistakes I find. They are good as a starting reference only, we need newspaper reports preferably as local to the event as possible.

Buffalo News only reports Flakes beat Lloyd Marshall of Detroit. No pre- fight write up nor a big post fight write-up. Marshall being a top fighter at the time you would think it would be big news. Also Buffalo Courier dosn't even mention that fight in results. So probably is a different Marshall or that Michigan fighter.

I changed to Lloyd Michigan.

Not only that, but the real Lloyd Marshall was from Ohio (and born in Georgia) not Detroit, so it almost certainly has to be another fighter with the same name, or a misprint.

Thanks very much for your help.
