Re: Frankie Gavin vs Steve Saville
The wolvs battler is a sawn off, stumpy, front foot fighter from memory - Gavin has high level, refined counter punching skills. If he can resist the temptation to get involved in a brawl he will stand Steve on his head. That said, Blues v Wolves meetings have been firey events in recent times: if Gavin is in the mood for a scrap this could be a fun fight whilst it lasts...

It is a good fight for him to take Saville will teach him a few things but Gavin seem's a class act and should win this comftorable
Re: Frankie Gavin vs Steve Saville
Quality match up, and shows a lot of confidence in Gavin. He is, of course, very unlikley to lose- it would be a rare error of judgement in matchmaking if he did.
I'd guess, though, that the difference is physical size.

Gavin in 2 rounds. You'll see the best of Gavin when opponents go looking for him. Saville fits the bill perfectly.

imo Dont think he will land a shot, Gavin to quick and clever, 4 rounds at most...
Re: Frankie Gavin vs Steve Saville
i hope saville takes him the full 6 so frankie get's some more rounds under his belt.gavin is a class act. i feel that gavin will be moved quicker then the other olympian's due to his boxing brain and abilityLondonirish wrote:alexpaterson wrote:It is a good fight for him to take Saville will teach him a few things but Gavin seem's a class act and should win this comftorable

Good test for a novice. Saville is a class below in terms of natural talent, but he's got decent pro experience and will absolutely be coming to win. Much better than standard journeyman fare for Gavin.

Don't see Gavin winning in 2 round!
Think Saville will be around at the final bell, having lost by 5 rounds.

From Both boxers
Steve Saville
“Lightweight is my natural weight although I have fought for the Midlands light welterweight title.
When this is over I want to go back to lightweight and defend my Midlands title before Christmas.
ve got to pay for the turkey somehow,” he chuckled.
“I will be treating him as my worst enemy.
I have met him and he is a nice kid but I have a job to do. I am going to give him a right tear up.
I will be able to take his punches all day but he won’t be able to take mine. It is his first trip over six rounds and he will be glad when it is all over.
He knows all about my style, the entire boxing world knows, but I have spotted a couple of things so I have some surprises in store.
He occasionally holds his guard low and if he does that against me he will soon learn that it’s a big big mistake.
I don’t care where I fight but it would have been fantastic to have had this one in Wolverhampton or Birmingham in front of our own fans. Because this is going to be a real cracker,” he added.
From Frankie Gavin
“This is without doubt the toughest opponent I have faced.
Steve will be a good test for me especially as it is my first trip over six rounds.
But in all honesty he has not been in the ring with anybody who is in the same class as me and he has lost to people who are not as good as me.
In addition to that I know his style and it will suit me down to the ground. He will come looking for a fight and he will get one.
Since turning pro I have developed my ability beyond recognition especially sparring up to 12 rounds at a time.
Having said that I still have a huge amount to learn and this meeting with Steve will be a big help in that direction. He has been stopped only once so he is tough.
If I make it a second stoppage for him then so be it, but my main aim is to get some good tough rounds under my belt and to give a quality performance to keep my growing army of fans happy.

Sums it up well- he's out of his natural weight class, but takes the opportunity- fair play to him!Old bones Ian wrote:

I guess Saville might be a little cautious, hoping as much to see the final bell as to win the fight.
Re: Frankie Gavin vs Steve Saville
dont think frankie will stop saville but will win all six rounds and i think he will make it look easy aswell

Such a shame this couldn't have happened locally.

True Russ - its a fight that should be taking place in the West Mids.Russ L wrote:Such a shame this couldn't have happened locally.
(although that would exacerbate the threat of trouble between Blues and Wolves fans I suppose..)
Re: Frankie Gavin vs Steve Saville
This is a great test for Gavin. I hope he takes adopts the same patient approach that Groves had in his last fight and uses his boxing skills to outbox Saville. Very good match-up for Gavin, he should learn a lot from this one. Cant wait for Friday's card it is a crackin night of boxing.

Re: Frankie Gavin vs Steve Saville
imo Sav's suited to Gavin, he'll probably win all rounds, maybe stopping him - doubt he will hurt him it will be a mixture of an accumalative punches job/questionable stoppage from the ref (which most the "olympic" prospects seem to get). Saville will miss a lot and make Gavin look like a terrific mover. I hope Saville makes a decent show of himself he's great to watch (his stoppage win against Baz Carey in the 7th for the Midlands strap was small hall fight of the year for me last year) and is a nice bloke. Then again in a Midlands derby you never know what will happen lol
