Q & A with Derry “The Golden Boy” Mathews
Q & A with Derry “The Golden Boy” Mathews
Having turned pro at the beginning of 2003 having won the 2002 ABA title the sky seemed the limit for Liverpool’s Derry “The Golden Boy” Mathews. However after winning the British Featherweight title & WBU title in 2006 things haven’t gone so well in fact they’ve been pretty abysmal of late and his career has dipped to 21-3(11) with those 3 loses coming in his last 4 outings. Mathews is only 26 and was released from his contract with Hayemaker and has recently signed with Hatton promotions where he’ll make his return to action against Scott Lawton 26-5-1(5) on 13 November. He hasn’t been given an easy start by his new promoters either. Lawton has fought Amir Khan, John Murray & Jon Thaxton, though they all stopped him. A win over Lawton would propel Mathews back into the title action domestically. Here’s what Mathews had to say.
Hello Derry, welcome to 15 rounds. com
Anson Wainwright - Your scheduled to fight Scott Lawton in his back yard of Stoke on 13 November. How do you see this fight? What do you know about him?
Derry Mathews - I see this fight against Scot as very tough fight but the pressure will be on him to perform in front of his own fans although I am taking a army of scouse fans down like I do every were I fight. Scott is a very good opponent and this could be the start of something big for me with Hatton promotions.
Anson Wainwright - Is the Lawton fight at Lightweight? If so do you intend to fight there from now on?
Derry Mathews - The fight with Lawton is a Super Featherweight contest we have to both weigh 9 stone 6 (132 pounds).
Anson Wainwright - You haven’t had the best of times recently losing 3 out of the last 4. What can you tell us about how things have been for you?
Derry Mathews - Things have been tough for me but its how you bounce back that counts, my family an friends have been superb and the support of the Liverpool fans. I have got a new dietician & strength conditioner on bored as well now so feel great.
Anson Wainwright - You had a good run in 2006/2007 when you beat John Simpson, Stephen Foster Jnr & Matthew Marsh. Do you see the Lawton fight as a chance to get back to that sort of level as your still only 26?
Derry Mathews - Of course this fight will put me back in the mix but I no if I let Scott win it will be him getting all the shots at titles that’s why am not letting it happen I feel confident.
Anson Wainwright - How far do you still think you can go in Boxing?
Derry Mathews – I still believe I can get to the top or I wouldn’t be doing it.
Anson Wainwright - How did you first get into Boxing?
Derry Mathews – I lived next door to the Solly boxing club Salisbury ABC & had my first fight at 11.
Anson Wainwright - What do you like to do away from Boxing?
Derry Mathews – I spend time with my family and friends but am always around boxing.
Anson Wainwright - At the moment the Boxing scene is thriving in Liverpool with the Smith Brothers, David Price, Tony Quigley & Tony Bellew etc. What can you tell us about Boxing in Liverpool at the moment?
Derry Mathews - The boxing in the city is top class at the moment I’m in the same camp as the Smith brothers, Joe Selkirk, Joe McNally and Paul Edwards so our gym is flying at the moment and we will have a British title very soon (This Friday Paul Smith faces another Liverpudlian Tony Quigley for the British Super Middleweight title). But every one in this city wants each other to do very well cos it’s a close nit city and come 3 years time we will be boxing city of the world.
Anson Wainwright - Who was your Boxing hero growing up?
Derry Mathews - Mike Tyson, Naz & Barrera
Anson Wainwright - Finally do you have a message for all those who have doubted you?
Derry Mathews – I’m not really bothered what people say I’m just going to prove every one wrong and wipe that smile of there faces…and I’ll be back bigger better an stronger thanks to the doubters.
Thanks for you Time Derry and good luck with Scott Lawton.
Cheers Derry

Golden Boy ffs, give it a rest, but got to hand it to the lad he gives me a good laugh everytime he gets sparked
dont like him one bit
Re: Q & A with Derry “The Golden Boy” Mathews
good luck to derry in his comeback, hope he does well...agreed with the others though he should drop the golden boy nickname...it just doesn't suit.
I hate it when boxers assume nick names of legends it just makes em look daft...lee 'lights out' purdy for example...c'mon man you're no james toney!

I dont like the guy simple as, if you dont like my input tough titties. You been in one before then
Alright I'll come clean, I think he is a dirty fighter simple as that, saw him against a pal of mine, John Simpson, and didnt like what I saw from the Liverpudlian, the Dirty Derry tag is well deserved I.M.O. Also thought John was very hard done by in that one

Dont like to see guys badly KO'D but have to agree with Top Dog here, thought Simpson was a bit hard done by. And yeah can see why they call him Dirty Derry. Did he not get badly KO'D by a wee mongolian guy lately, thought he would have called it a day after that, but all the best all the same.

He has a heck of a fight coming up on 13 November against Scott Lawton that's a last chance saloon for both guys.

He seems a nie guy i'm sure he'll come back from his defeats but he has a tough fight against Lawton to come through
Re: Q & A with Derry “The Golden Boy” Mathews
if he wants to win on points he'll have to win big if its close cant see it going derrys way in stoke
Re: Q & A with Derry “The Golden Boy” Mathews
Bit harsh - I give him some credit for coming on here and being man enough to admit to his failings. Golden Boy is a bit OTT though...Top Dog wrote:Golden Boy ffs, give it a rest, but got to hand it to the lad he gives me a good laugh everytime he gets sparkeddont like him one bit
