In the FOTC, Ali had a definite swelling to the right side of his face/jaw area after the fight.

It has been a long time, but I've always assumed that swelling could basically be attributed to the Frazier left hook that put Ali down in rd 15.

Am I incorrect here?

Was the beginning of the swelling on Ali's right side becoming evident before the 15th and the knockdown punch?

I don't know...but Frazier hit him so often in that fight with the left. Could most likely have been cumulative.

Doubt one punch did that. Look at the fight. Frazier is nailing him with lefts routinely.

Some of them were absolutely hellacious, at that.

I am old enough that I saw the fight on closed circuit on March 8, 1971. The swelling was not noticible until after the 15th round knockdown, and I do not recall the commentators mentioning any swelling until that time.

Yes, this is definitely how I also remember it.

Frazier's counter left hook after Ali threw uppercuts was very effective in that fight, thats for sure. If ANYONE ever did more damage to Ali with a single punch, though, I'd point more towards Ken Norton breaking Ali's jaw or Shavers in the 2nd round. Frazier, however, I believe caused the swelling because of many punches, not just one.

Yancy, do you remember whether Dunphy specifically noted the swelling in Ali's jaw after the knockdown? As I think about it, I seem to remember Dunphy saying something about it as the 15th progressed, and him wondering aloud if Ali's jaw was broken . . . Unfortunately, I don't have the fight on tape or DVD to check. Maybe you remember?

I checked and Dunphy did NOT say anything about Ali's jaw during the 15th.

The right side of Ali's face did seem swollen, at least to me, in the latter part of the round, after the knockdown. I remember photos of Ali after the fight that definitely showed a swollen right side.

But I do remember quite well the sight of Ali getting knocked on his ass and the better man winning the fight that best represented the peak of each man as fighters and the fight that was without question the most important fight of each man's career, thank you.
