So who did Calzaghe beat exactly?

Post by SnoopyLoopy »

Reid? Well that's debatable.
Lacy?
Kessler?
Hopkins? Again debatable. I had it a draw with Hopkins winning because of the knockdown. Calzaghe was 4/1 on betfair after the 12th round. 44 years old.
RJJ? 40 years old.
Viet?
Salem?

Great career!

Hopkins clearly lost, apart from the knockdown, all he did was foul, hold, fake being hurt from non low blows and cry to the ref. Plus Joe barehumped him. How can anyone say that was a debatable decision when Hopkins was a crybaby?

nah not really, Cal just gets the credit for 'ruining' Kessler. Same way he did Lacy.

not sure why you're comparing his wins over kessler and lacy.

one was a complete domination, the other was at least competitive.

I don't see how he ruined Kessler.Outpointing a guy in a relatively competitive fight where nether man absorbs any serious punishment is not ruining someone.

Turns out Calzaghes win over Kessler wasn't even that impressive compared to Wards win. However, I still think Kessler can beat Froch, although it won't be easy. Calzaghe wouldn't have touched this tournament. He's lucky he retired just as the 168 pound division was getting good.

Andre Ward was a dirty fooker in this fight.

Kessler was a WBC & WBA champion, unbeaten when they fought.

It's still Joe's best win.

i don't think so. i'm not a joe fan, but kessler was highly regarded with 2 belts at the time.

the calzaghe fight probably taught ward a lot about how to beat kessler.

joe did beat hopkins (when still a pound for pounder), kessler (unbeaten), lacy (unbeaten), brewer, mitchell and a few good brits, made lots of defenses and got out unbeaten, with an easy payday at the end. not my cup of tea but in his way he was very successful.

see how he gets on without a home ref. i have a feeling ALL his fights will be at home, sadly. with him being an olympic medallist, he will bring lot of US support, which is good for the health of the tourney and any future ones. certainly a more positive force than that piece of_ _ _ _ _ dirrell.

agreed, joe would not have touched a tunrye like this.

super 6 is a way to reestablish 168 after joe cautiously milked all the money out of the division when he cashed out! it's a way to mend the damage done...

it's great to see these guys go for it (apart from dirrell, who doesn't seem too interested), willing to risk thier records, their titles, which is so different to what came just before them...

A blind man could see Kessler was way too basic and a slick fighter could beat him, since he only has plan A. Thats calzaghes best win, which just got sh*t on by andre ward. I love it!

44 year old hopkins had him down and arguably won their fight, lacy

The Americans, who aren't exactly known for over rating British fighters, regarded Calzaghe as a genuine P4P challenger towards the end of his career. He was rated in the top two or three by Ring magazine and Emanuel Steward, if I remember rightly.

I think the only bone you could pick with him is that he should have stepped up to elite level earlier in his career.

I think it will be fair to re-asses the true meaning of Calzaghe's victory over Kessler should Kessler not come back and redeem himself. Kessler was absolute garbage last night, if he does not come back and prove himself a great fighter, then i'll go as far as to say he never was that great. Good, but never great. He has a solid resume with some good names to it, but no great names. He has been hailed as Calzaghe's greatest victory, and if his best days prove to be behind him, then Calzaghe's narrow victory over him was not really that great at all, at least it wont be in my opinion anyway!

He beat Chris Eubank in 1997

In 1998 - Chris Eubank gave Carl Thompson 2 brutally tough fights - nearly knocked him out in the 1st fight

In 2004 - Carl Thompson handed David Haye his arse

So if you are gonna play the game of Calzaghe beat Kelseer who lost to Ward

Then what about

Calzaghe beat Eubank who gave Thompson 2 brutally tough fights who then went on to beat David Haye who then went on to become WBA World Heavyweight Champion
