A few weeks ago poor Jason Rushton who had lost his last four, two inside schedule, and eight months inactive was permitted to fight a ten rounder against unbeaten Brian Rose. Sadly we all know what occured that night and we are all thankful that Jason is now recovering well
On last nights Small v McDonagh undercard Danny Parkinson, four years inactive and coming of a horrible knockout against Gary Woolcombe was permitted to fight the dangerous and highly rated Mark Thompson with predictable result (I know Parkinson was a late substitute, but that is no excuse)
What is going on, don't the Board have a duty of care to protect fighters and veto potentially dangerous matches?
Both of these obscenites were under the auspices of the Central Area Council, if anyone from that venerable body frequents this forum, your comments would be welcome
Another quality match sanctioned by Central Area Council
Re: Another quality match sanctioned by Central Area Council
I said that at the time. Danny was out of his depth after all that time out.
Re: Another quality match sanctioned by Central Area Council
4 years inactive, or coming off a KO defeat to Woolcombe....he can't be both.
but I agree....if you're talking about the Mark Thompson the banger that campaigns around Welter, as I suspect you are, then that is a very poor match up indeed, and would't have got past me.

Re: Another quality match sanctioned by Central Area Council
Area councils are always terrified of promoters and will always be bought over by a "the kid has sold 200 tickets" type of argument.
This is of course nonsense, because their main concern should be boxers' safety.

NEBF,
It can be both.
The Woolcombe fight was May 2005 and Parkinson's last fight before the Thompson fight.
I'm not sure what's gone wrong for Mark.
He stepped in at short notice to face Vuma at LM when Moore pulled out, put in a decent performance but doesn't seem to have built on that.

well i wouldn't really say a result 4 years ago is coming off anything, but I take your point.twenty six wrote:NEBF,

I think that Thompson did build on it in as much as he got a couple more wins. One of them, as I remember was a real war with a tough French guy (think French).
Thompson wasn't ready to kick on after Vuma, internationally IMO, as he'd still only had around 12 fights at that time as I remember, and although he fought excellently (tbh I don't remember if he won or lost, but they both gave each other as much trouble as each other could handle. Thompson took lots of flush shots and wasn't experienced enough to make a permanent leap to that sort of level IMO.
But like you, I don't know what has prevented him from getting into the British Title mix, as attitude wise, he seemed very dedicated.
Re: Another quality match sanctioned by Central Area Council
i have to ask, but how do you know Anthony Small doesn't have a scooter licence?
Re: Another quality match sanctioned by Central Area Council
The Board do not match fighters, they can only go on what is presented to them. The boxer would have had a valid licence and also passed stringent medical assesment prior to fighting. Any fighter who loses a number of fights is monitored and then put on an observation period. Unfortunately some times fights are sanctioned that are miss matches, the problem you can get is that an up and coming fighter may only have a few wins and a journeyman is put in with him who has vast more experiance but the prospect ko's the fighter. As in any fight there is danger to both parties.
