Re: calzaghes legacy
He'll be back to take on the winner of the super six or chad soon
2 of calzaghes biggest hyped up wins
now put to rest
kessler - a decent champion , nothing more , destroyed by a guy having his first world title fight , when super joe beat him he was the greatest british champion ever
jones jnr - knocked out in 1 round before and after super joe gets knocked down and can only outpoint this fragile years past his prime ex champ
everone knows it , that why super joe ducked just about every challenge there was by defending his wbo strap for years
hopkins , jones , ottke , pavlik etc all in thier primes lol , nah we got sobat , pudwell , oap brewer etc
super joe in the super 6 - nah that means fighting guys in their prime
you have and never will be missed joe - total waste of talent

Adam's right, you've obviously got a bee in your bonnet, Bob.
Re: 2 of calzaghes biggest hyped up wins

also when do you define hopkins prime - seems his job over pavlik was as good as anything hes ever done or was pavlik over hyped as well?
Re: 2 of calzaghes biggest hyped up wins
looks lads i dont like calzaghe because he wasted everybodys time by fighting stiffs for years
a complete waste of talent
i sorry but kessler and lacy never were , never will be anywhere near being called a great champion
either will joe - a good chmapion but never a A level champion , you need to fight greats and legends for that
hopkins prime was 3-5 years pre taylor......anyway i thought hopkins won , 6-6 in rounds by hopkns sneaks it with the knockdown
pavlik not great

Got to agree with Boxerbob, i'm glad he's gone from the sport.boxerbob wrote:you have and never will be missed joe - total waste of talent
Given his obvious level of talent, he was one of the worst comfort zone fighters this country has ever produced. He tried to redeem himself over the last 3 years of his career, first when he was publicly bullied into fighting Lacy, then he went on to fight Kessler, then a 43 year old career middleweight, and finally a shot-to-sh*t superstar.
I am pleasently pleased that Lacy has proved himself to be a sack of sh*t since, and that Kessler and Jones lost in such eye opening fashion, if only because it all helps take away this dumb ass legend status Calzaghe has been falsely set up with.
He deserves mediocre acknowledgement for his achievements, anything more and were selling ourselves short.
Re: 2 of calzaghes biggest hyped up wins
Hopkins is still a top fighter, barring his losses to Taylor and Calzaghe(all of which were highly competitive and controversial) he's beaten other world rated opponents clearly, this Hopkins-hasbeen talk is nonsense.
Roy Jones Jr. is a boxer who's strength was his reflexes rather than his boxing ability, but now that he's older and those reflexes have gone he's much easier to hit and exposes the massive flaws in his style. Green KO'd him in one round because Green despite his technical flaws hits like a mule(unlike Calzaghe) and was able to exploit those massive weaknesses in Roys style.
Was Calzaghe great? Nah not IMO but I'm not one for throwing out the "legend" tag so easily like most people do, I don't think RJJ was all that great either, great fighters adapt their styles over time, RJJ never did once those reflexes were gone so was he.
Joe was a good fighter who would probably have beaten every supermiddle in the division during his WBO reign but never fought them for whatever reason.

I guess Ali wasn't much good either, because some of the best names on his record went on to lose fights later in their career.

Hopkins is Calzaghe's best win.boxerbob wrote:the thing is lads....

He was highly rated in the P4P rankings when Calzaghe beat him and he still is now.
Re: 2 of calzaghes biggest hyped up wins

when it comes to hopkins his style has never changed so age doesnt matter to him
Re: 2 of calzaghes biggest hyped up wins

hopkins career list is 100 times better than super joes

i thought he beat calzaghe but thats not the official result and the result will go down as a win for calzaghe in the history books.boxerbob wrote:hopkins is a legend that many including myself beat joe calzaghe

hopkins also fought alot of nobodies thoughout his title reign he was fortunate enough that he caught a weight drained tarver and a too small tito and DLH to create a legacy on

Just for you Alex......alexpaterson wrote:Calzaghe was a very good champion he wasnt great but very good I dont see why a lot of people hate him so bad?
Because he speant approximately 6 of his PRIME years fighting way below the level British boxing fans (and later world boxing fans) wanted to see him fighting at. He was goaded for years to step it up, but continually/endlessly played the donkey/carrot game. Then, after all those years hiding, combine Hatton showing him the way and boxing fans around the world applying an unrivialled amount of never seen before public pressure onto him to either fight Jeff Lacy or fcuk off for good, he finally took a challenge. He whipped the (in hindsight) plodder around the ring and is now a self proclaimed legend of the sport.
Word's cannot express my level of happiness that he is finally retired.
Re: 2 of calzaghes biggest hyped up wins
couldnt have put it better ALI
hamed and hatton left allegedly to fight the best especially away from home
calzaghe was happy to stay with warren and fight bums for years

The fact is Calzaghe for a truckload of bums and his 'big wins' were against men who subsequently have been proven to be very ordinary - Kessler and Lacy, and Jones latest disaster underlines how shot he's been since he turned 35 & dropped back down from heavy.

What will you say about Kessler if he beats Froch?
Re: 2 of calzaghes biggest hyped up wins
well done to kessler as he is beating a decent champion , again froch is nothing special and not great.
but at least froch will go away from home to fight the best

Re: 2 of calzaghes biggest hyped up wins
Does there have to be a thread every week on this? Every time someone Joe beat loses then it makes him a failure?
After Ali beat them:
Sonny Liston went on to get beat by Leotis Martin
Joe Frazier drew with Floyd Jumbo Cummings
George Foreman went on to lose to Jimmy Young
Do you think there would have been people asking if this tarnished Ali's legacy?
Before those of a retarded pre-disposition say it, no I am not comparing Joe to Ali.
I think everyone agrees that Joe was a supremely talented fighter who never had as many big fights as he could have throughout his career and yet every week people feel the need to have to say this in 1000 different ways.
