Even though I hate Leonard, I honestly pick him over Mayweather on any given day. I dont need to think twice about it.

I think Floyd would fall aprt in this one.

SRL by close decision for me.
SRL is just as quick, bigger, stronger & can turn slugger when necessary.

Even if he were to lose this one, I do not ever see a fighter as talented as Floyd, falling apart! Mayweather might well indeed get beat, but he would not fall apart or unravel, not imo!Ezzard wrote:I think Floyd would fall aprt in this one.

Re: Mayweather Jr vs Sugar Ray Leonard
They have almost equal boxing skills and reflexes, Mayweather's defense may be slightly better. But Leonard's tendency to turn aggressive when a technical boxing match is too close for comfort is what would win him this fight. Leonard by late KO or Unanimous Decision.
Re: Mayweather Jr vs Sugar Ray Leonard
Leonard would be too fast, too many rapid combo's (maybe the 1st and 2nd might miss or be blocked, but not 3 or 4 :) ), underrated body attack and punching power. He could turn on the aggression too.
These factors, combined, would probably be enough to put Mayweather on the defensive, where he would lose a fair decision.
I wouldn't doubt Ray might even try to break him, particurlarly, if he felt there was nothing of any real consequence, coming back at him.
No doubt, some people will pick Mayweather and thats fair enough. However, I feel Ray more than matched Mayweather's best assets (bar defence) and substainstially was superior in all the rest.
The shoulder rolling and single pot shots would never be enough to beat a man like Ray Leonard, imo.

Nice to see Sugar getting recognized for the multi-dimensional fighter he was.

Peak SRL had no weaknesses IMO.
Great footwork, blistering handspeed, excellent stamina, granite chin & a big heart.
Add in the fact that he could box & punch a bit, he was as close to the original Sugar as it was possible to be.
It's just a shame that he didn't have more fights & spent so much time in retirement.
Re: Mayweather Jr vs Sugar Ray Leonard
Leonard too big for Mayweather. Easy points win or late stoppage
Re: Mayweather Jr vs Sugar Ray Leonard
Interesting point now that you bring it up. Leonard would be one of the bigger fighters that Floyd has faced. Leonard is the same height as DLH but was able to start at 147. People thought DLH's size gave Floyd problems so imagine someone DLH's size that moves like Floyd and can do everything Floyd can do plus punch harder.bollox wrote:Leonard too big for Mayweather. Re: Mayweather Jr vs Sugar Ray Leonard
Sugar Ray Leonard at welterweight, was probably one of the top 3 greatest fighters that I have ever seen in my lifetime. I could not see him get beat by Pretty Boy Floyd. This is not Pretty Boy's weight class. His weight class is from jr welterweight on down.
Re: Mayweather Jr vs Sugar Ray Leonard
Floyd is a great fighter but I can't see him enjoying this fight. When he starts having to fight to close the gap he's going to get KO'd or he's going to go into his shell.Rocky Balboa wrote:Even if he were to lose this one, I do not ever see a fighter as talented as Floyd, falling apart! Re: Mayweather Jr vs Sugar Ray Leonard
Sugar Ray Leonard would probably have been FMJ's joint 2nd worst nightmare at welterweight: the worst being Thomas Hearns who would probably have put him into orbit!Ezzard wrote:Floyd is a great fighter but I can't see him enjoying this fight. Bump.
This thread is an old one.
Has anyone changed their opinions since 2009?

Mayweather is the better defender, but I would take Leonard by decision. He was much more willing to get hit.

I've never thought of it like that, but it's a great point, SRL was much more willing to take a gamble in order to win.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:ThatOne wrote:IMHO, anything Money can do Ray can do better.harshfriller wrote:Ive got Leonard by Decision

I couldn't imagine Floyd doing that, plus I just don't think he'd be big enough anyway.
Floyd is a small welterweight & he isn't beating a great big weltwerwight like SRL.

I wouldn't call Leonard bigger, he grew out a bit later in his career. But it's not like Ray was draining to make Welter.

Re: Mayweather Jr vs Sugar Ray Leonard
I have got Sugar Ray Leonard giving a Floyd Mayweather an utter masterclass in this one as SRL in his pomp had the quicker hands more power in his punches and the superior footwork plus he could adapt his style to whoever he was facing etc so I take Leonard on points.
Re: Mayweather Jr vs Sugar Ray Leonard
SRL is many levels above little Flloyd.
Flloyd would have been put in a coma by tommy hearns, and the animal duran of the first meeting v little money would have been like watching a lion maul its keeper and the crowd can do nothing about it.....benitez would have taken Mayweather too......SRL is faster, a better tactician, has a proven chin, and ability to adapt....if a old worn out rusty Mosley could almost level Mayweather in the second....Tommy hearns would have kept him on the floor......SRL wins every time....maybe even stops the bum

Re: Mayweather Jr vs Sugar Ray Leonard
Saad makes a great point that bothers me with the current boxers (and I have to say particularly American boxers, but not all). The greats I grew up with wanted to win and put on a show. Mayweather, Hopkins, Wlad, Ward…you can’t really love any of them, though they are undeniably great boxers.
I prefer Martinez, Williams, Pac, Morales…they remind me more of the guys from an era when the greats were far more offensive and took more risks.
Am I suffering from nostalgia syndrome?

Leonard would overwhelm Mayweather. Too much of everything. Sugar by KO.

i dont get how people have srl koing mayweather. fact is fmj's defense is spectacular, one of the best defensive wizards of all time.
with that said, srl wins by wide UD
