YURI ROMANOV: WHERE ART THOU?

Post by overhand_right »

I was there live when he shredded a still-dangerous Jonathan Thaxton at the York Hall. Such picture perfect punching and technique, precision hitter, good to watch.

He hasn't boxed since.

Why oh why is this man throwing away his peak years? A boxers life is so short and less gifted & deserving men are challenging for and even winning belts in his absence.

Where is Yuri?

He had a vacant world title to box for in the Summer but vanished.

A case-book study in how boxing is a business rather than a sport based purely on merit. No fan base = no strong promoter = meandering career and obscurity beckoning.
Sad as Romanov has talent...

Romanov is certainly a talented fighter. I would fancy him quite strongly against both Mitchell and Khan.

The Earl loss was very dubious, although Earl fought very well that night.

He has speed, power, solid chin and a good boxing brain. Come on Yuri, wake up. As for Fondu, not sure he reads these boards but, wtf is he playing at??!!? :o

He has a very, very talented fighter there who is wasting / being wasted, as time goes by. A young fighter, such as this, should not be fighting once every one and a half years.

...And that narrow loss to Earl came after Romanov had had another 16 month layoff. Lots of ring rust.

His waste of talent is similar to that beastly Mongolian who butchered Derry Matthews - another fella who we want to see a lot more of.

he had an IBF title shot, a winnable fight, fernando angulo, a juan diaz victim. but he had visa problems, couldn't get in the country. poorly planned world class campaign? bad luck?

if romanov is still ranked, then perhaps he will end up fighting giant ali funeka, probably the worst opponent out there for the stumpy (if classy) romanov.
