Probably because they don't know how, it's not as easy as it looks you know.

requires elite levels of concentration, reflexes, flexibility, anticipation, and the kind of relaxation that is very rare in the ring even at the elite level. plus lots, and lots of practise. by definition not everyone can pull it off.

You have to be fast, have expert timing and other solid skills to get away with it properly. Lots of guys would turn away, eat two set-up jabs and then go to sleep on a right hand trying to pull that.

Look at just about any Bob Foster tape. He was the master at it.

James Toney was great at it against Barkley he got hit but took almost all the power out of it using the roll or even slipping it he was brilliant at shoulder rolls but now he likes Swiss rolls a bit to much

Go to the 1:26 mark. It's one of the few times he's used. It's also one of the few fights if not the only fight Angelo Dundee wasn't in his corner. He said his trainer for thst fight taught hi that. Shame he didn't use it more. It's fun to watch.

And of course it's Floyd Mayeather Jr.'s staple.

It's not for everyone. Just because a few great defensive fighters use it doesn't mean it works 90% of the time with 90% of fighters. Winky did just as good with his peek a boo defense that everyone can't use as good. The shoulder roll positioning does leave your face open so the fighter using it would have to have lighting quick reflexes like Floyd has.

IMHO, the shoulder roll is fun to watch and boxing should be entertainment as well as port.

So . . . guys who can't do the shoulder roll well should do it anyway and get tagged - all for your entertainment and amusement? Clearly, you have never been hit on the chin.

These guys are athletes not gladiators. "Hail ThatOne, we who are about to die, salute you," is not their mantra. . .

I have boxed.

No, of course I don't think athletes should perform feats they are uncomfortable with or incapable of. I wouldn't expect Dwight Howard to hit twenty foot jumpers or Tom Brady to run quarterback options.

All that being said , sport is entertainement and if it ceases to be entertaining most folks will stop watching it.

I am sure sir you will find what I wrote fairly unremarkable or objectionable.

In actual competition or just sparring?

Glad to know you are not a sadist. :TU:

Just sparring. I was nothing special but my dad was a Golden Gloves fighter and my uncle was a professional boxer.

It is a 'next level' skill. Alot of trainers do not teach it
because it is hard to perfect or because it is a stylistic
flair.

Much like the cross arm defence, the Ambrose Palmer
method, or the Dundee style that pastrano, Ali, Ellis
etc had, or even the Peek a boo of Torres, Patterson
and Tyson.

I personally like to offer the shoulder and fight from it,
but it takes timing and you can not 'get set' or you will
be tagged by a guy that adapts.

I managed to use it from my back in my last fight, and
returned fire, so it is MMA adaptable.
