Pat Barrett talks to Terry Dooley about training Tyson Fury and how far the young heavyweight can go, The Matthew Hall split amongst other things.

If Fuy listens and settles down can he go all the way

I have got alot of respect for Pat but Fury will not be a genuine world champ, he just don't have the tools.

You wouldn`t expect a new trainer to say any different about a hyped young prospect he`s just taken charge of .. would you?

Its too early to say either way, because fury has only had a handful of fights. He will improve.

Terry D wrote:Cheers for the link in, Lee. One thing that impressed me about Tyson was his knowledge of the heavyweight division. Knew the records and form guides of all his UK and European rivals. Pat is working hard with him and it will be interesting to see how things develop in 2010.

One thing that stuck out was Pat's license situation. Granted, the BBBoC have to take certain things into account but if they can allow Tyson to ply his trade over here despite a criminal record then they should certainly allow a former British and Euro champ to work the corner.

“It is familiarisation with the trainer in the corner,” he explained. “I believe in a guy like Tommy so I want to be there in the corner with him and Brian so he can see the same faces that he’s seen in the gym. I brought success to the British level as a fighter and brought the European belt over here and tried to win a world title – don’t forget that I did good things as a British boxer.”

Barrett makes a good case for receiving his trainer's badge. He is putting the spadework in so why not allow him in the corner on fight night?
Pat needs and more importantly deserves his corner license.

Hopefully Pat gets his licence. Having spoke to the younger fighters in the gym like Quigg and Askins its obvious the respect they have for Pat and having him trian them and then be in the corner come fight night will surely only help them.

fury will never ever be a world champion. he got schooled by an english level fighter.fair enough he is a novice. but he doesn't have the athleticism or the raw talent to reach the top. i see him being a decent european champion in about 6 years

Fury is a decent prospect but it would have done him the world of good just to come through his first 10/15 fights the way most fighter do, he clearly enjoys the hype but it wont do him any good in the long run.

I disagree totally.

I`d fully expect Fury can dig deep when he has too .. just doesn`t possess the tools.

No disrespect to Barrett, who I'm sure is probably a competent trainer, but Fury missed a great opportunity when Manny Steward showed an interest to train Fury, but Tyson declined.

When a guy like Manny Steward shows an interest in you & offers you the chance for him to be your trainer, you do not turn it down!

The BBBoC needs to give Barrett his licence, ok so he's done a bad thing in the past, but he paid for it.

There are other trainers that have been in trouble and gone back into the game and proven themselves, Jimmy Tibbs being the prime example.

Tyson Fury ain't gonna be a world champ. He just doesn't have anywhere near the required skill to make it to the top. Can't fault Barrett for saying it though. He is hardly going to come out and say I don't think Tyson has what is good enough to be world champion. Fury does have a nice jab. I will grant him that. He can use it very effectively but overall I don't even think he ever be good enough for Euro level.
