Pacman at welterweight

Post by tonyevs »

I know he holds the worlds title at welterweight - but where does Manny Pacman stand at this weight?

Does anybody actually see him as the top guy at the weight?
Does anybody see him having the beating of the like of kermit Cintron, Antonio Margarito, Shane Moseley or Paul Williams .. maybe aside from from Moseley - I see each of the other names being just too big ... Williams would seriously punish Pacman.

So where does this leave the real worth of a worlds title?

i think it;s irrelevant. the fact is, prior to illegal substances row, he had the bargaining power, enough so for top welters to drain themselves giving pac the advantage. he's had the real world titles, and 140-147 was the time to cash it in vs other big names. otherwise he'd be fighting horrible, slip-up fights like tim badley (140) and humberto soto (135). the titles don't matter right now; it's the money from casinos and PPV due to big names colliding. perhaps that's why i don't really get into these fights, as they are seldom competitive/exciting.

Kinda missing my point there autobarn ..

Not a question of illegal substances, fight weights, money generated etc..

Simply, who sees him as the real top 147lb fighter?

He has many comparisons to Henry Armstrong ... and for me, one of these comparisons is that. He may hold a title at the weight, but he is def not the top guy at the weight.

For me he hasn't won a welterweight title because his fight with cotto was set at 145,this is one of the reasons that i want floyd to beat him and i hope it is at 147 minimum

He's my mumber one at Welter simply because of the manner in which he has crushed his opponents.

He destroyed Cotto. Absolutely destroyed him.

Anyone who doesn't have Pacquiao at number one is either blind or ignorant.

The guy is a legend. We may never see his kind again.

I am neither blind nor ignorant but I don't consider Pacman the number one welterweight. Last time I checked to be considered number one you have to beat the number one - Cotto was not the number one welterweight - he had been beaten by Margarito who in turn got beaten by Mosley.

I give Pacquiao all the credit in the world. He has comprehensively beaten top class fighters for a long time. The last twelve months he has been at his peak, beating De La Hoya, Hatton & Cotto. Its not so much that he beat them, its the manner of his victories that makes it all the more extraordinary.

However, until he beats Floyd Mayweather, I rank Mayweather as NO.1 at Welter.

Please let Pacquiao-Mayweather happen! The world awaits.

Thats a legitimate point mate and one i find hard to argue with but it still wont change my stance.

Mosley and Cotto could have gone either way, Pac flattened Cotto.

Can I ask you aquestion? Who do you think would win? Pac or Sugar?

Luckilly i`m neither .. :TU:

So by him beating ODLH, Hatton and Cotto .. hmmm

Cotto I see the argument for, the other two ...

Once again the forgotten man is Paul Williams. A guy who says he can still make the welter limit.

point is, who cares? it's all about the cash in. how good pac is as a welter, where he rates, is ambiguous. because of his bargaining power to make names like cotto weaken themselves.

Thats the point of the thread though.

Just because he can now generate big money fights doesn`t make any difference to my original question.

Simply. Who thinks he is the top guy - best fighter - at 147lb?

 Got me there mate - I'd have to go with the Pac-man! :TU:

Mosley is one of my favourite fighters - watching a few of his fights got me hooked on boxing. But he just isn't the same fighter as the one who beat ODLH the first time round. I think he's got his hands full with Berto tbh. So I guess I have just admitted I think Pac is the no.1 welterweight! I guess I'm just old-fashioned in thinking that you have to beat the linear champ to be considered "the man" at the weight. Another point though, is arguably the Cotto that beat Mosley isn't the same fighter who got ko'ed by Pacquiao. Its widely thought that he was never the same mentally or physically after the Margarito beating.

Cotto beat Mosley BEFORE the AM fight.

I know DG that's my point.....maybe Cotto was past his best by the time Pacman ko'ed him. :TU:

:OhYes:

Who has Manny beaten at 147? Just DLH who had not made 147 for since 2001.

Cotto at 145 is not Cotto imo.

Mosley knocks Pac out......at 147 and so do others.

Yes, I think right now Mosley has the strongest claim. He lost a close one to the pre margarito Cotto - who really has never looked the same since he took that fearful battering.

I'd love to see Mosley v Pacman, I think it would be a great fight, the two men have similar styles and attributes.
