Because he moved up and took an open roster spot. No boxers entered the tournament in state tournament at 147lbs.

We had a boxer lost a 139 two years ago and advance to finals at National Silver Gloves. He lost but made it way further than most people thought he would. I think Kareem looks really strong at 147lbs. and I expect him to do well. He faces a really good boxer tomorrow, so a win to advance would be very impressive.

JOs is a little different becuase it's not a franchise like the Silver Gloves, it's a USAB Tournament. Open slots are picked solely by regional coordinator in the Silvers, but in the JOs independent slots are done by a committee (at least last year was). You had to submit for open slots to go to nationals in open slot and it's selected by committee, which I believe is the same as the at-large selections which is the USAB High Performance Director, CEO and athlete representative. But to answer ur questions more directly, "Yes" you could have gone up at higher weight if no one filled that slot.
