Mayeather v Pacquiao is officially off!!!

Post by ALI »

Quotes taken from BS.com

"The planned March 13th super fight between between boxing hero and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and former No.1 Mayweather Jr is off after Mayweather chickened out despite Pacquiao accepting a compromise proposal to bring the blood test closer to the fight date from his original 30 day cut off period to 24."

"After two days of talks, including a nine hour mediation on Tuesday in California, BS.com was advised that retired federal judge Daniel Weinstein was'nt able to convince the camp of Floyd Mayweather Jr to accept an offer by Manny Pacquiao to reduce his willingness to take random blood tests from 30-days to 24-days before the fight and as a result the fight is off."

"Insidesports.ph, Standard Today, Viva Sports and BS.com understand that the Mayweather handlers led by Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and Mayweathers top adviser Al Hayman had tried to convince the fighter to agree to the 24-day blood test proposal which Pacquiao had agreed to and which medical experts had said was more than sufficient to detect any traces of performance enhancing drugs, but they were turned down resulting in the fight being called off."

Great news as far as I am concerned. Maybe now we can focus on the fight that REALLY matters - Floyd Mayweather v Matthew Hatton. :-?

Interesting point Terry, here's another couple of interesting quotes also taken from BS.com

Mayweather v Mathew an ebarressment, says Billy Graham
Mathew fighting Floyd is something that i dont think will happen, it would be an ebarressment for Floyd to have that fight," declared Graham. "Its a wonderful opportunity for Mathew and he can say he's been in with the best but it would'nt be good for boxing, the fans, or Floyd Mayweather as its a complete mismatch."

"I would be quite dissapointed in Floyd (if he took this fight), i really would", he continued, "but everyone is entitled to an easy payday. Then again, and lets face it, Floyd can go out and have an easy payday against against someone like Marquez, that is how good he is, so why have this one? Mathew would'nt be able to land a punch and boxing would be embarrassed, but good luck to him."

Bob Arum on the warpath
"Floyd Mayweather walked away," Arum said to USA Today. "Our guy was agreeable, Mayweather was'nt. Its not surprising. I always felt that he was'nt going to do the fight. He knows Manny will beat him. Mayweather's never stepped into the ring with a guy he had any question but that he was going to beat."

"Thats why there's never been a (Shane) Mosely, there's never been a (Antonio) Margarito, there never was a (Miguel) Cotto, and there's no Pacquiao. Floyd Mayweather is a coward. He will never fight anyone that will remotely give him a tough fight. Here's a guy who, the rematch with (Oscar) De La Hoya was a huge fight, it would've made millions and millions, and he walked away from it.... I'm not dissapointed in the sense that i always knew that it was going to be this way."

It would seem that the lengthy mediation period between the representatives of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather jr have failed miserably.

Speaking to the USA today, Bob Arum declared that "Floyd Mayweather walked away,"

"Our guy was agreeable, Mayweather wasn't. It's not surprising. I always felt that he wasn't going to do the fight. He knows Manny will beat him. Mayweather's never stepped into the ring with a guy he had any question but that he was going to beat."

"That's why there's never been a (Shane) Mosley, there's never been a (Antonio) Margarito, there never was a (Miguel) Cotto, and there's no Pacquiao. Floyd Mayweather is a coward." said Arum.

Following a whole day's mediation, during which Arum declared that Pacquiao would agree to 24-day testing rather than 30 days, Team Mayweather rejected the idea, thus rendering the fight dead.

The revised testing was backed by experts whom agreed that the period would still detect the use of any performance enhancing drugs.

"He will never fight anyone that will remotely give him a tough fight. Here's a guy who, the rematch with (Oscar) De La Hoya was a huge fight, it would've made millions and millions, and he walked away from it.. .. I'm not disappointed in the sense that I always knew it was going to be this way."

According to Arum, he will now look to negotiate a fight for Manny with Yuri Foreman who is unbeaten and recently captured the light middleweight WBA title.

It would mark yet another step up in weight for the Philippine fighting machine and underlines his talent in confidence, which has seemingly worried Mayweather.

'Pretty Boy' has often came under scrutiny for swerving the finest in his division for several years. Whilst proving beyond doubt his greatness at the lower weights, since his arrival at light-welter he was accused of moving up to avoid the challenges of WBO champion Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton and the then IBF champion Kostya Tszyu.

Since his arrival at welterweight, he has only fought Sharmba Mitchell and Zab Judah (who both started out a division below). His only acid test came in the tough, but taylor made fight with Carlos Baldomir. A strong but extremely slow and technically limited short-term champion.

Mayweather earned kudos for taking on De La Hoya at light middleweight - in a fight with tremendous financial incentives - but was given a torrid fight by the goldenboy and talks of a rematch soon fizzled out.

Whilst we can sympathise with Mayweather's stance on the testing, the accusations against Pacquiao have been completely baseless. Pac has never been tested positive for anything illegal and the argument has been seen purely as one to unsettle the current pound for pound king.

Sad state of affairs if true.

Arum is as big a crook in Boxing as there is(allegedly of course  )but he has a point when he highlights Mayweather has so far refused to fight Mosely, Margarito and Cotto. He could have also granted DLH a rematch as Floyd scraped that fight(1 maybe 2 rounds at the most)imo.
For a guy who claims to be such a legend and who has "mixed it" in an around welter for so long, it's poor that he hasn't faced at least one of them 3 above, let alone Pacman and thats also forgetting Williams.
All fights that could have been made over the past 3 years.

Mayweather - Fantastic talent but nowawdays a massive twat. He has surrounded himself with yes men who talk him up and they, along with the money, have gone to his head.
I don't think he has the hunger or desire to genuinely seek out a real challenge anymore.

I agree entirely

I just dont get why so many people stand behind Mayweather on this issue. He has just plain walked away from the most lucrative fight in boxing history, all because he is suspicious Pacquiao is using illegal drugs of some sort. Give me a fcuking break.

I'd like to know why the fighters are getting involved in all this testing row, sureley the rules are set by the governing bodies not the fighters,if the various commisions were happy then why wasn't mayweather.

If Floyd lets this opportunity pass he will have destroyed his legacy. The decision not to fight Pacquiao will haunt him for the rest of his life and no amount of money will comfort him.

Will happen later in the year, too much money not too happen, all this is probably part of the hype.

Bare in mind though if the fight doesnt happen, its Pac who turned down $40m in exchange for 1ml of blood

Apparently Pac demanded a public apology from Mayweather if they wanted the fight

No No No. Surely you find Mayweather's requests a little insulting?

How can he demand tests that are not required by governing bodies or State Athletic commisions?

Because the commisions testing has been allowing blatant PED cheating for ages now?

Pac has agreed to a test 30 days bfore and immediately after the fight? Dont you think this is reasonable?
