How many British boxers can rightly have said to have held the title of No1 p4p in the world?

I imagine Calzaghe last held the title (as it were) when he beat BHOP.

I'm just wondering how many other British boxers have been regarded as p4p No.1 at some stage.

Lennox Lewis was probably close enough but whether he was at the top I don't know. Naz was probably there or there abouts too.

Calzaghe was never pound for pound king. Even after beating Hopkins, the vast majority of people still had Pacquiao as number one, and in my opinion Calzaghe didn't have a strong argument to challenge that position.

Wasn't Mayweather in retirement though? At the end of 2008 the top 5[according to Liverpuncher.com-similiar to the ring] were:

1. Pacquaio
2. Calzaghe
3. JM Marquez
4. Vazquez
5. Margarito

When Calzaghe peaked in most peoples pound for pound rankings Mayweather was in retirement and Pacquiao was the overwhelming pick for #1 pound for pound. #2 usually varied on the majority of lists between JMM or Calzaghe

Jock McAvoy, mid-late 30s was the most feared MW in the world.

denied a shot at the world's MW title, had one at L-HW against no less a fighter than J H Lewis and was the ONLY fighter ranked in the world's top 10 by the Ring at both MW and L-HW, 1938.

they never used that term then but McAvoy was in fact that at his weight, MW.

Naz cannot really have been regarded as the best at his weight. Go through his record, and you`ll see lots of old fighters with past good reps. The 1st real test he had .. he lost. Some will argue that of course . But what great fighter did he beat that was at their best?

I`ve said it before .. so will say it again. Britain has never produced a fighter/boxer on par with a Roy Jones jr./ODLH, JC Chavez, Azum Nelson, Mayweather, Pacman, BHop etc :(

you must obviously be talking about greatness by achievement - which is far from greatest in competition, one vs the other...

in the course of boxing history (british), by their individual weight classes, ALL of these fighters could have been beaten by plenty of british fighters!

No, Curry was overhyped by the yanks, he was a very good fighter but he was never the "New Sugar Ray" like they claimed and he was certainly not the best fighter in the world P4P at a time when Hagler, Hearns and Chavez were around.

Anyhow lets just look at the great little LW cum WW Eric Boon, whom in 1948 when at the end of his career goes a beauty against French great Robert Villimain and this is Fight of the year!

Villimain a couple of years later scares the _uck out of our all-time great MW's and is defo one of the greats at the weight!!

Boon was well past it and among some of the lads that gave him hell was his rival Arthur Danahar, now two great little fighters, Still not Britain's best at the weight and the next 3 kick Money's little ass!!!
