Re: Xavier Horan - New Zealand heavyweight
I'm aware of the tournament, but I'm yet to receive official results.
This part doesn't make sense:-
"We made the criteria clear – they weren't allowed to have had a professional bout in the last five years."
Horan's final opponent, John Argall, had three professional fights, the last in 2001. Gallagher said: "They were all well aware of the criteria ... which are well within the rules of professional boxing.

Re: Xavier Horan - New Zealand heavyweight
You are right, it makes no sense at all. But I am assuming that the fighters involved have been or are pros and like the prizefighter tournemant in the UK - would go on the record - I thought the newspaper article would be of some help.AntonS wrote:I'm aware of the tournament, but I'm yet to receive official results.

On this occasion, prompt distribution of official results ain't all that important, as most if not all won't be jumping back into the ring in a hurry.
Re: Xavier Horan - New Zealand heavyweight
I heard this tournament was more of a tough men comp flogged as boxing in order to obtain police approval/licence, which is a requirement for all shows.
Re: Xavier Horan - New Zealand heavyweight
If it had police approval then it would have to be a pro match.AntonS wrote:I heard this tournament was more of a tough men comp flogged as boxing in order to obtain police approval/licence, which is a requirement for all shows.

Re: Xavier Horan - New Zealand heavyweight
Who is Mike Attree and why is he listed as for NZ? And how come your not listed as an editor?
Just curious. Was bored and looking at boxrec editors.

Mike was when he resided in NZ. He now lives in Brisbane & mainly deals in history.
I took a break in 2007 after my heart attack & had my name removed during this period.
Everyone knows me so there's no need to put it back

BoxRec is still not updated with the results of the "Heavyweight Explosion" in Auckland Dec 2009. In order to maintain the sights consistency and accuracy, results of the fights should be added.AntonS wrote:I'm aware of the tournament, but I'm yet to receive official results.

I saw a dvd of the tournament and the ring announcer clearly states "....this is a professional contest fought over...."; the event took place in a known boxing venue, prize money was awarded to contestants, there were competitors with professional records and it was conducted under the auspice of a professionally sanctioned referee. There is enough evidence to suggest that the event took place and was professional. BoxRec qualifies fights as either verified, unverified or unsanctioned (and publishes regardless). This event falls under one of these categories. The results of the fights should be recorded/published in order to maintain the viability of BoxRec consistency with the types of results entered.
Re: Xavier Horan - New Zealand heavyweight
If the officiating body is not prepared to send us results, there's nothing we can do.
Re: Xavier Horan - New Zealand heavyweight
There's no need for Auckland Boxing Association (Predominantly amateur assoc, which does officiate pros from time to time) sending results.
Whilst professional rules were observed, the combatants wore 16ozs gloves, which constitutes more of a exhibition tournament.

Knock outs, broken jaws and brain bleeds. Exhibition tournament! Can't wait for them to put on the real thing!AntonS wrote:There's no need for Auckland Boxing Association (Predominantly amateur assoc, which does officiate pros from time to time) sending results.

Kiwi boxing is Kiwi boxing. Fight for supremacy between officiating bodies is (& has been for decades) by far more important than boxers. They put bums on seats & not boxersDavid Bowman wrote:Knock outs, broken jaws and brain bleeds. Exhibition tournament! e.g. ABA claims Xavier went into this fight without a pro fight in last 5 years??...He made his debut in August 2009. http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=581769
But 'cos it was under New Zealand Professional Boxing Assoc banner it wouldn't recognize it
Other times, a bloke could be banned by one mob 'cos of his dismal record, but is dismissed by other mobs. Grrrrrrrrrr!
New Zealand pro boxing is slowly sliding into oblivion....so who really gives a shite?
ATM, corporate shite shows seem to be doing better.

Re: Xavier Horan - New Zealand heavyweight
Touché! There's a sleeping fan base in NZ who is positive that it is already in oblivion. A shame really because there is no greater spectacle then a professional bout fought amongst two quality fighters in it to win! Unfortunately NZ does not have a strong platform to deliver this continually and effectively to generate a viable ground to develop and expand the sport (and the athletes keen in the sport). Corporate boxing brings, out and only appeals, to the "family and friends" crowd and advances the "have a go" mentality (which is admirable but crap to watch) rather then the "pugilistic spirit" where the real excitement lives. I personally believe "Corporate Boxing" does little to promote the sport, at the much more exciting and marketable level of quality pugilism and it is defiantly not a breeding ground to develop/discover the next champ. It's like a whole new division of the sport in NZ, a testament to how poorly boxing is portrayed to the public. Amateur Boxing = Fighter not paid to fight, Professional Boxing = Fighter paid to fight, Corporate Boxing = Fighter pays to fight. However, that's probably another blog thread. Cheers for the feedback.AntonS wrote:Kiwi boxing is Kiwi boxing. Fight for supremacy between officiating bodies is (& has been for decades) by far more important than boxers.
