Former world boxing champion Eamonn Magee has been sentenced to six months in prison after being convicted of head-butting a man in north Belfast.
Magee, 38, was ordered to serve three months for the assault outside the Ardoyne Kickhams GAA club.
Another previously suspended three month term for motoring offences was also enforced.
District Judge Ken Nixon told him: "You are a violent man who lacks any credit."
The former-WBU welterweight title holder was released on bail following confirmation that he plans to appeal the assault conviction.
Magee, of Eskdale Gardens, Belfast, was found guilty of head-butting Kevin McLaughlin after being asked to leave the club last August.
Magee, known as The Terminator during a professional career which included 33 fights, had claimed he was attacked by up to 15 people after being confronted at the club from which he was barred.
According to the boxer, he touched Mr McLaughlin's nose with his head after being pushed three times.
At a sentencing hearing, his barrister said: "Eamonn Magee's adult life has been a roller-coaster from the significant highs of world-class sporting achievement to the lows of being the victim of four serious incidents including two shooting incidents."
He told the court Magee, a father of four, had acted as a positive role model by training fighters since his retirement.
However, District Judge Ken Nixon pointed to Magee's record, which included an entry for affray.
Mr Nixon said to him: "You get no credit for contesting the matter."
The judge agreed to release him on his own bail of £500 after being told the assault conviction would be challenged at the County Court.

Didnt all the CCTV footage of the incident mysteriously vanish between the incident, and the police arriving ?

I posted this on another thread about Magee, but thought i'd put it on here about what happened to me.Wales wrote:Didnt all the CCTV footage of the incident mysteriously vanish between the incident, and the police arriving ?
I've been on the wrong side of an incident where the pub suddenly lost the CCTV recording.
Funny how that happens when there is the possibility that the staff are in the wrong.
I feel that if the CCTV can be proved to be in working order, and the recording is suddenly 'lost', then the bar owner should be prosecuted for with holding evidence.
I stopped a bag robbery in a bar and was set on by the bar staff, i've since been informed they were part of the set up.
One of the staff got pushed over and another got a bit of a graze on the neck, i threw no punches , but got smacked quite a few times.
The police turned up and i was arrested for assault, luckily i managed to get enough witnesses to back my story up.
But the CCTV was 'lost' by the bar owner, and this wasn't taken into account by the police. it was just a 'oh well, thats the usual'

In the case of Magee, I am not sure the missing CCTV can have a lot of bearing - he has a drinking problem and a long history of violence.
This was always going to happen at some stage IMO.

It should have alot of bearing, as he may get convicted on past incidences , as juries may think he's just doing it again. The video would show alot more light on the incident.TerribleTerry wrote:In the case of Magee, I am not sure the missing CCTV can have a lot of bearing - he has a drinking problem and a long history of violence.

Agreed - the difference between believing differing stories and actually seeing with ones own eyes what happened.Old bones Ian wrote:It should have alot of bearing, as he may get convicted on past incidences , as juries may think he's just doing it again. How convienent that the CCTV footage disappeared.
I remember reading "Watch my Back" by Geoff Thompson, who worked as a Bouncer in Coventry; and he states in his book that it was common practice to fiddle the VCR or erase the footage, when he or his work colleages wanted to work someone over without the risk of procecution.

Yep, the fact that te CCTV footage 'disappeared' makes me think that the publican's story wasn't fully reflected by the footage, hence the loss of the tape.Wales wrote:Agreed - the difference between believing differing stories and actually seeing with ones own eyes what happened.Old bones Ian wrote:It should have alot of bearing, as he may get convicted on past incidences , as juries may think he's just doing it again. My intended point was that missing CCTV footage or not, a man like Magee, with a penchant for both drinking and violence, was always bound to end up serving time for violence - if it wasn't for this incident, it would have been another...

I have run doors for many years, no video would ever be handed over if it was to show us in a bad light. Sometimes in bigger units the boys would not have the same control of the tapes but in a smaller place like this it would not be the case.
The only reason this tape has not been handed over is because they had something to hide.
Re: Eamonn Magee
Aye, Magee is a walking nightmare, especially when pissed up, but the missing CCTV is a classic load of ballacks.
That's a terrible story about you in that bar, Ian - they should be prosecuted indeed.
A lad I know once got pulled for assault and he was adamant he'd been provoked. The coppers got the CCTV footage out and it was one of those cameras which pans round...when it got round to the lad I know it had missed the provocation element...it just got round to him as he banjoed the other lad.

I got randomly head butted, for no reason whatsoever by an off duty copper a couple of years back. In self defence I punched him back once.
As there was no tape available, they wanted me to go in on xmas eve, so I would have been locked up on xmas day, as he had then claimed it was me that assaulted him for no reason!
Obv I didn't turn up and in the time untill they caught up with me I managed to find a tape from a neighbouring restaurant that picked it up.
Suddenly it was not me being investigated and I was only wanted as a witness for an internal proceedure!
However I was then put under pressure not to make a complaint and to make a statement, that I was not making a statement! So it all went away for everyone!

Eamonn Magee must learn how to control his temper in every fight.
