Greb footage
Greb footage
Recently I read that there were atleast four filmed Greb fights (Walker,Flowers and two with Tunney) . I also read that the material that the films were made of did not last long and are lost forever.
Can anyone confirm any of this?

Re: Greb footage
I think its possible that if a fight film collector in the early 1950's transferred any such mentioned prints from the silver nitrate stock to safety stock
and the films are still in an attic or basement or storage center, they may still exist.
I remember someone here mentioning that in the 1960's a fight film collector offered Jim Jacobs a print of a Harry Greb fight for sale ,but obviously
the transaction never happened for some reason.

Re: Greb footage
I can confirm with certainty Harrys 1924 title defense vs Ted Moore at Yankee Stadium was filmed and shown in upstate NY Theater's
Re: Greb footage
When and How did that sparring footage turn up?
I seem to remember up until a few years ago the only known film footage of Harry Greb ,was that of him hitting a heavy bag which turned up at a university in South Carolina film archives..(looks like it was filmed at the same time and place)

Re: Greb footage
I would love to know the origins of some more unearthed fights/fighters. It could lend credence to some hope for finding more. For example, where did that recently unearthed footage of McVey-Jim Johnson come from?
Where did the footage of Langford-Lang come from? How long ago was it discovered? What is the source of all the film of Gans?

Re: Greb footage
I first saw the film footage at this site.
http://www.harrygreb.com
Im not sure when the site went up,forgotten it was about 10 years ago.
Anyway I cant remember if the site mentioned in which year the footage was discovered by first a film archivist and secondly a boxing fan
who recognized its importance and rarity.
How many film archivists are boxing fans anyway?
probably not too many.

A lost cut of Cassavete's 'Shadows' was eventually found in an attic.

Okay, not as long ago but I bet there's film yet to be unearthed.

Re: Greb footage
It was Jimmy Jacobs who spent a lifetime coming up with 90% of the films that have been unearthed.
It was a disaster that his partner Bill Cayton signed them over to ESPN.
I can only hope they haven't been destroyed by ESPN, who obviously doesn't have a clue what they are.
