Johnny Lewis nightmare sees fight cancelled

Post by ryan711 »

A NIGHTMARE that woke Johnny Lewis has convinced world champion boxer Gairy St Clair to drop a title fight in Melbourne next month.

The legendary boxing trainer had never dreamed of something horrible happening to one of his prized boxers.

But earlier this month Lewis was so worried by a dream that he phoned St Clair immediately.

"I had a vision Gairy was fighting in Melbourne and was knocked out and they couldn't bring him around," Lewis said. "It was bloody awful. I've never had anything like that before.

"I remember Sugar Ray Robinson didn't want to fight a bloke because he dreamt he had killed him in the ring.

"A priest talked him around to take the fight and, lo and behold, the guy died in the ring. I didn't want Gairy to take the fight. I had to say something."

St Clair was so grateful that he wasted no time pulling the pin on his March 18 fight with Lance Gostelow.

Sydney-based St Clair, a winner of 42 of his 54 fights, said he had only returned to the ring to help pay private schooling fees for one of his daughters in Africa, and would now stay retired.

"Johnny doesn't usually say stuff like that, he's always looking out for my safety so I dropped the fight," St Clair said. "It wouldn't matter if I'm making $10 million or $20 million, Johnny is always looking out for me. He looks out for all his fighters."

St Clair will spend tomorrow at Strongarm Gym in Sutherland promoting Box'Tag, which features two boxers in protective gear scoring points via sensor technology.

Some people believe in that sort of thing.

Maybe Johnny just got the idea in his head that Gairy was continuing to fight for the wrong reasons and that thought affected his dreams.

Gairy's recent win/loss ratio has been poor. I would be happy to see him retire rather than see a former champ wind up a punching bag.

I'm just glad that Gairy has retired, he can now go out a winner.
Lance can hopefully still get a credible opponent

Draw.

4 rds...Fair result. Messy fight, not much landed from either. The Paki kid is only average Anton, with all due respect.

I caught Johnny's boys in action on Saturday Night at punchbowl, but the most impressive from his team was Peter Geogio scoring a convincing UD on Debut, King Davidson was very boring and illustrated how he lacks true power.

Yeah Shah was very average, i honestly believe that being in Johnny's camp is not the best camp to be in. He is aging and i dont think he has the ability to train another world champ.

Paul Fleming was brilliant on that night thou, Billy's done well bringing the kid from QLD over here to train with him

I stood in as Kane Buckleys trainer for that night, yep Flemming was great. I know Kane's record is terrible but Flemming showed a bit of everything the other night. Best prospect here imo, even after a few fights.

The only thing I thought he might lack is genuine one punch power. Paul told us after the fight he hurt his left hand in rd 2 and we thought that as well during the fight. But he had everything else. He should get better too.

Kane is going to give it away now...maybe have a fight once in a while he said. Good kid, too tough for his own good.

Believing in a Nightmare sounds a bit dodgy to me
