Rocky Marciano vs Sonny Liston, primes
Rocky Marciano vs Sonny Liston, primes
I reckon this matchup has been discussed before, but anyone care to venture an opinion?
Sonny brutalizes Rocky, imo.

Re: Rocky Marciano vs Sonny Liston, primes
I have to give it to Liston. Because of the fact he's a little less busy in the early going, & a good bit less frenzied in his assault than Foreman, I think of Liston as having an outside shot of losing to the likes of Marciano (Frazier as well, for instance), but I would still favour him pretty heavily against these kinds of guys.yancey wrote:I reckon this matchup has been discussed before, but anyone care to venture an opinion?

Marciano running onto that jab --- with its range & power --- wouldn't be pretty.
Re: Rocky Marciano vs Sonny Liston, primes
I have 2 thoughts. My first is to agree with you and go with Liston. I would say, however, that Marciano nearly had his nose ripped off against Charles and he kept fighting and KO'd him. If Marciano withstood Liston's best, for some reason I picture Liston getting frustrated later on and Rocky being able to get to him and maybe even KO him. If I was forced to bet money I would say Liston with a late round stoppage.
Speaking of liston here is an interesting video about him I have been meaning to post. Not sure if anyone has seen it but I remember watching it as a kid and I found it on youtube recently. Pretty interesting.

Thats the orginal version of the episode of UNSOLVED MYSTERYS,with Robert Stack that aired in 1989.
They updated the same episode with some other guy narrating but it isnt the same.
BTW thats Tony Tucker playing Liston.

Liston, by murder
Re: Rocky Marciano vs Sonny Liston, primes
Reportly Liston was pushing drugs in West Las Vegas, and was attempting to muscle in on another drug dealers territory there.
Anyway since no one knows for sure on which day he died, perhaps he was killed on New Years Eve?
No one would even notice the sounds of any struggle.
Also I read were he was found in his bed dead and also he was lying on a bench at foot of the bed and it was broken.
They found several balloons of heroin, but perhaps those were left behind or fell off a large batch of balloons taken out of house in a hurry?

Whoever "reported" that is full of it.
Another smear of Liston.
Re: Rocky Marciano vs Sonny Liston, primes
Liston has the goods to beat the Rock. But an always motivated,
in shape Marciano is a quite the risk for most guys. I can see
Liston winning a gruelling decision. Would be interesting to see
the brave Marciano working the inside and do his best to by pass
the reach and range of Liston.
A fun one for us to watch, a gruelling one for the combatants.

In the book THE DEVIL AND SONNY LISTON by Nick Tosches.
He interviewed Lowell Powell ,Powell said that Ash Resnick was talking to him about Liston's "narcotics dealing"(assuming Powell knew).
Powell had been a policeman in St.Louis who knew Liston since the 1950's.
Liston hired Powell as his bodyguard and right had man in 1963,when Powell retired from police force.
Obviously Liston would probably not discuss any of his drug dealing operations particularly with a former policeman.

Now you've done it. You cited The Devil & Sonny Liston. One of the G-Man's favourite publications to ridicule.Brutu wrote:In the book THE DEVIL AND SONNY LISTON by Nick Tosches.

Re: Rocky Marciano vs Sonny Liston, primes
I cited that book also last week when I mentioned in another thread that Bernie Glickman(a front man for the Chicago mob and one time Liston manager)
called up his son Joel Glickman who was a big gambler and was going to bet big on Liston to win the fight against Ali.
and told him "dont bet, there's something wrong".(page 214)
Anyway there should be a separate forum here for book reviews I think.
