Re: Jimmy Young Versus
Floyd Patterson, Lennox Lewis, Oliver McCall, Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson would have beaten him IMO.

Re: Jimmy Young Versus
McCall beats Young?? Oliver is tailor-made for Young.
He beats McCall, Witherspoon, Spinks, Galento, Moorer, and Foster. A Roy fight is 50/50 in my book.
Loses to Patterson, Ellis, Lewis, Holyfield, Holmes and Tyson. But the more I think about he has a real shot vs Lennox.

Re: Jimmy Young Versus
He would own Vitali.
Holmes & Tyson are the only two I would give him virtually no chance against.
I'd favor Holyfield, Witherspoon, Lewis & Patterson
Moorer, Jones & Spinks are 50/50
I like Young solidly over the rest.

Re: Jimmy Young Versus
It depends with young, on his best night he could be great on his worst night he could be terrible.
Re: Jimmy Young Versus
Assuming a fit (210 range) and motivated Jimmy Young, he's going to be a handful for any of these guys.
W Dec. 15 over Tim Witherspoon
W Dec. 15 over Chris Byrd
W Dec. 15 over Roy Jones, Jr.
50-50 v. Michael Spinks -- could go either way
W Dec. 15 over Tony Galento
L Dec. 15 to Floyd Patterson (styles make fights-- Young can't handle Patterson at all)
50-50 v. Jimmy Ellis -- as with Spinks, could go either way
L TKO by 13 to Lennox Lewis (Lewis dominates)
W Dec. 15 over Michael Moorer
W Dec. 15 over Oliver McCall
L Dec. 15 to Evander Holyfield (close fight)
L Dec. 15 to Larry Holmes (Holmes dominates, Young struggles to last the distance)
L KO by 8 to Mike Tyson (Young way out in front when Tyson catches him)
W Dec. 15 over Bob Foster

Re: Jimmy Young Versus
LOL @ McCall beating Young
Re: Jimmy Young Versus
Nobody giving Young a chance against Tyson? The Quick Tillis fight makes me think Young could win the bout.
Re: Jimmy Young Versus
I give him a chance! My instinct is that prime Tyson would eventually land one but you are right -- it's certainly not out of the question that Young could pull off an upset.Ezzard wrote:Nobody giving Young a chance against Tyson? The Quick Tillis fight makes me think Young could win the bout.
Re: Jimmy Young Versus
Beating Lyle and Foreman might give one pause, but I don't think either of those nights were great nights for those fighters in more ways than just the fact that Jimmy was in the ring with them. So if it's a post jailed Tyson, I'd say Jimmy would likely win. But if it's Before the Douglas fight, I'd put my money on Mike.

Re: Jimmy Young Versus
Tillis was dancing and jabbing, that isn't really Young's style. Tyson always had issues with a good jab, but Jimmy was a slow starter and that is bad news against a fighter like tyson.
Re: Jimmy Young Versus
Young doesn't hit hard enough to get Tyson's respect or attention.
Douglas, Holyfield, and Lewis might not be Marciano, Foreman, and Shavers but they packed a wallop.
Tyson walks right through him. This fight doesn't last as long as this one:

Agreed, Tyson walks through Young, but I think Young makes it past the first round.ThatOne wrote:Young doesn't hit hard enough to get Tyson's respect or attention.

But not the second.
Update: I've been thinking about Young-Tyson a bit more.
My gut still says peak Tyson still overwhelms him, but Young could be so slick that if he could get past that initial onslaught he might figure out a way to last awhile.
If he got it to rd 5 in decent shape he might be able to have Tyson frustrated and tiring. After that, who knows.
Wonder what would happen if Jimmy stuck his head outside the ropes against Tyson?
Tyson would go berserk, imo.
Re: Jimmy Young Versus
You know, people keep saying Jimmy Young couldn't hit but that's not true. He didn't score a lot of knockouts because he never went after people, prefering to box cautiously and, above all, defensively. But a lot of the guys he fought, including Ken Norton and Ron Lyle, said you had to be careful coming in on Young because he really did have some juice. You can't just look at the knockout percentage.ThatOne wrote:Young doesn't hit hard enough to get Tyson's respect or attention.

Re: Jimmy Young Versus
Young was clever and wasn't intimidated by anybody, including George Foreman. Tyson possessing more speed than the likes of Foreman, Norton, Shavers, Lyle might be troubling for Young but then again Tyson often struggled to stop the survivalist types, see his fights against Smith, Tillis, Green, Tucker. Young was only off his feet against Shavers, no shame in that.
I can see some similarities here:

More dancing by Tillis but there are plenty of moments where he's standing in front of Tyson as well. Young had a better chin than Tillis in my opinion.
I think this fight could very well go the distance.

Re: Jimmy Young Versus
I've seen Young fight as the aggressor against Wendell Bailey and he displayed impressive power and physical strength, overpowering Bailey inside three rounds. Young was in horrible shape and probably thought he had to get the fight over with early. Now Bailey wasn't much of a pro but Young was far from feather-fisted, his punches certainly had an effect on Foreman, Norton, Lyle. I'm not saying he's a knockout puncher but no one wants to walk into counter-punches. Can't see anyone walking through a prime Young like Tyson did to Spinks.Mr E wrote: You know, people keep saying Jimmy Young couldn't hit but that's not true. Re: Jimmy Young Versus
If Jimmy hugs and clutches his way to round 5 against an increasingly frustrated Tyson??? Lesser fighters did it. Biggs went into the 7th. Bruno the 5th. Thomas the 6th. Tucker and Smith went the distance!
I really don’t see Tyson blowing Young away. I’d go as far to say that a prime Young would be the best fighter Tyson ever fought.
