Six ROUND CONTESTS.
Alf Mitchell (Islington) beat Joe Tiernan
(Clerkenwell).—Tiernan forced the exchanges
at-the start, and in the opening round he
shook Mitchell with a hard right on the forehead.
The Islingtonian soon returned to the
attack, and in a hot rally he brought his man
down with a spanking right on the chin.
Tiernan was in trouble, but he reached his
feet and managed to hang on until the call of
time. Refreshed by the minute's rest, Tiernan
came up in decent shape for the second
meeting, and Mitchell, taking things rather
easily, failed to add to his lead. Towards the
close of the round, however, the North
Londoner set himself going, and Tiernan had
the worst of some smart two-handed work.
The pace was brisk in the third bout, for
though Mitchell did most of the leading Tiernan
hung on gamely, and in both this and the
fourth round he kept his man busy. Halfway
through the fifth Mitchell landed some flush
lefts on the mouth, and scoring fast in the
last two minutes he gained a well deserved
award.
