Best Irish Boxer or night involving an Irish boxer.

Post by Srebmun »

Today being the Irish New Year :TU: I thought I'd ask the question, in here rather than boxers of the past.

Personally my most memorable night was June 8th 1985 at Loftus Road Stadium when McGuigan beat Pedroza, a fantastic night, so he's my personal favourite, but prob' not the best if you consider the likes of John L Sullivan, Tunney, Jack Dempsey and Braddock were all born of Irish folks, and Tom Sharkey was born in Dundalk.

Or is it Mick Gomez perhaps?

Yous?

Same for me too, he was relentless that night and would have walked through a brick wall to win.

Yeah McGuigan v Pedrosa was brilliant. Another special night was Rinty Monaghan winning the world title at the Kings Hall in Belfast against Jackie Patterson - I love watching this old footage and brilliant atmospher.

Dunne MArtinez, because its the only bill in Ireland I went to and there was the comedy value of some big drunk irish guy having a piss after the fight whilst saying "3 euros a second that fight just cost me... 3 euros a second" - he was distraught

Collins really spooked Eubank with his hypnosis in that fight, which was great.

In my lifetime, I would have to go with Stevie Collins. He was the boxer who got me into the sport when I was a chap. Looking back over all the fights I have watched, it would be hard to beat McGuigan - Pedroza

dunne and cordoba had it all, watched it on line and it was a brilliant fight. I think Ireland had won the Grand Slam the same day so it was a great night.

Definitely Dunne Cordoba, one of the best nights of my life.

I was lucky enough to be covering the event for a paper, getting ringside seats.

The night had it all, poor Jim Rock competing with the rugby, even the amateur fight between Gorman and Moylette was a cracker. Dunne afterwards, just sitting slumped in the lift in a chair, too exhausted and dehydrated to do the presser. Cordoba taken to hospital and those close enough thought something was seriously wrong.

At one stage a woman sat in my seat after I did some interview somehwere. I got back, asked her to move and she wouldn't. Sit three rows back, in my seat, she says. I'm standing firm, just about to tell her to fornicate off but she eventually gets the message and goes. The bloke beside me goes 'You're lucky you didn't get angry and insult her.'

'Why?'

'Her husband is that man there,' he says, pointing to Eamon Magee in the ring, possibly the toughest looking bastard there that night.
